Title: Poetry Element Project Instructions
1Poetry Element Project Instructions
2Purpose
- By completing this project, you will demonstrate
that you are able to identify and explain common
poetic devices used in published poems.
3What is a Poetic Element?
- Look at your Poetry Terms handout.
Numbers 1 16 are poetic devices.
4Things like simile, personification, or
understatement are poetic devices used to
increase interest.
5So, if you find a line in a poem that says
- Her smile was like the sunshine.
- Youve just found a poetic element!
- (Its a simile)
6So, how do you get started on your Poetry
Project?
7- Your group will be given a packet of different
poems, and you will need to locate 10 different
poetic devices within these poems.
8Clarification
- NOT 10 devices in EACH poem,
- 10 elements total.
- That means, you may find
- 5 different elements in one poem, and then find
- 2 more different elements in the second poem,
- 3 more in the third poem, etc.
9TPCASTT
- Using your notes
- from Strange Fruit
- and A Boy at the
- Window, set up a
- Proper TPCASTT
- for ONE of the
- poems in your
- packet.

15After youve found 10 different poetic devices in
your poems,
- on a fresh sheet of paper, you need to create a
- Poetry Element key
- to explain what devices you found and highlighted
in the poems.
16The element key
- This key on a separate sheet of paper - has
numbers that coordinate with the numbers for the
devices you highlighted on the poems.
