• Observations are factual information.
• You can see it with your eyes.
• You can feel it.
• You can smell it.
• You can taste it.
• OR. You can hear it.

Examples of Observations

• The sky is blue.
• The siren is loud.

Inferences

• Inferences are a guess as to why a particular
  observation was made.
• An interpretation based on observations and prior
  knowledge.
• When you explain or interpret the
• things you observe you are inferring.
• Inferences are based on reasoning from what you
  already know.

Examples of Inferences

• The sky is blue because it is going to be a nice
  day today.
• The siren is loud because there is a house
  burning down.

  inferences made by the prosecuting attorney and 3
  inferences made by the defense attorney using the
  facts (observations) listed.

PROSECUTING ATTORNEY

• POSSIBLE INFERENCES
• The defendant is guilty because he was there.
• He cut his hand breaking the window.
• The blood on the doorknob is Swipes.
• Swipe touched the counter during the robbery and
  left his fingerprint.

DEFENSE ATTORNEY

• POSSIBLE INFERENCES
• Swipe is no more guilty than anyone else in the
  area.
• Swipe cut his hand while washing dishes.
• Swipe left his fingerprint while buying a
  newspaper.
