The People

• The Navajo tribe is located mainly in the four
  corners area of the Southwest United States. This
  area is where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and
  Utah share a border.
• The Navajo tribe is currently the largest tribe
  in the United States.

• This background is the flag of the modern Navajo
  Nation
• A rainbow symbolizing Navajo sovereignty arches
  over the Nation and the sacred mountains.
• In the center of the Nation, a circular symbol
  depicts the sun above two green stalks of corn,
  which surrounds three animals representing the
  Navajo livestock economy, and a traditional hogan
  and modern home.
• Between the hogan and the house is an oil derrick
  symbolizing the resource potential of the Tribe,
  and above this are representations of the wild
  fauna of the Nation.

The Culture

• Early in Navajo history the tribe was mainly
  hunters and gathers.
• When they came in contact with the Spanish they
  learned to herd sheep and goats.

• Navajo craftsmen are well known for their
  weaving, silversmith and artistry.

• The Navajo were a Semi-Nomadic tribe.
• The Navajo would have seasonal homes that they
  would move to for livestock grazing.
• The traditional Navajo home is called a hogan.
• The hogan is made of an inner lining of wood with
  outer layers of mud.
• The Navajo has several types of Hogans. The males
  hogan is square and pointy while the womans
  hogan is eight sided. The also had ceremonial
  hogans of different sizes.
• The hogan always faced east to welcome the sun
  each morning.

Navajo Nation

• The Navajo people have a very rich and full
  heritage. The Navajo culture has provided the
  U.S. with everything from vivid artwork and
  artists to code talkers in World War II.
