Title: Key issues on Producing Nutrient Statistics
1Key issues on Producing Nutrient Statistics
Robert Mayo Senior Statistician FAO Statistics
Division UNECE/FAO/Eurostat Workshop on
Environment Statistics (Budva, Montenegro, May
2013)
2Crop production and Non- fertilizer use
- Used for crop production concept refers to the
total quantity of fertilizers applied to the soil
to increase crop yields. - Non fertilizer use should recorded to ensure it
is not included in the fertilizer used for crop
production.
3Fertilizer Production
- Intermediates ammonia (NH3) and phosphoric acid
(H3PO4) - Ammonia feedstocks - natural gas, coal or
lignite, etc - Raw materials to manufacture phosphoric acid are
phosphate rock and sulphur.
4Fertilizer Production Double counting
- Straight fertilizers and ammonium phosphate
domestically produced or imported are often used
to manufacture other fertilizers. - Primary producers are those who use feedstocks,
raw materials and/or intermediates to produce
finished fertilizers. -
- Secondary producers are those who start from
finished fertilizer materials and produce other
fertilizers. - Only the production of the primary producers
should be included in the production data,
otherwise the same material will be counted twice
(double counted).
5Fertilizer Import and Export
- Important to record the correct product
- HS Codes
- 3102 Mineral or chemical fertilisers,
nitrogenous - 3103 Mineral or chemical fertilisers, phosphatic
- 3104 Mineral or chemical fertilisers, potassic
- 3105 Mineral or chemical fertilisers containing
two or three of the fertilising elements,
nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
6Fertilizer consumption in agriculture
Production Imports - Exports -
Non-Fertilizer use Consumption Or if you
are missing the Consumption of fertilizers Prod
uction Imports - Non-fertilizer use -
Exports Apparent consumption
7Manure and sewage sludge
- Manure cattle, Horse, pig, sheep, poultry,
guano - Compost decomposed raw material (animal manure,
garden and lawn waste) - Sewage waste.
