- Thursday, August 13
2Ten Things All Freshman Academy Parents Should
Know
- From the Schools Perspective
- by Linda M. Williams
- adapted from NMSAs Middle Ground, August 2007
31. IMPACT is what you know as homeroom
- Your child will have an Academy teacher for
IMPACT. Students will report to IMPACT at 720
for the first ten days. Then, they will go to
IMPACT once a week for thirty minutes.

42. You are not alone.
- You will have a support group of Freshman Academy
teachers and the JHS administration with whom to
share your childs triumphs and challenges. We
are here to help you in any way possible. Get to
know your childs teachers.
53. Ask questions
- Today, high school is different than when you
attended. If you dont know, all you have to do
is ask. You can get in touch with any teacher or
administrator by using the following email
address firstname.lastname_at_onslow.k12.nc.us. - For example melissa.anderson_at_onslow.k12.nc.us.
- Our phone number is 989-2048.
64. We place a great emphasis on your childs
education.
- We have placed your child into classes that best
fits his/her needs. We are protective of class
time. Students are expected to be on time and
prepared for class. First period starts at 720!
75. Everything counts.
- Your childs transcript begins today. Everything
he/she does from this day forward will follow
him/her to the college of their choice or the
college that will have them. Good grades, a high
GPA, class rank, sports, clubs, and organizations
help your child to go to the college of their
choice.
86. We call our tests EOCs (End of Course) rather
than EOGS.
- The state mandates that students taking English
I, Algebra I, biology, Civics and Economics, and
US History must score a level 3 or 4 in order to
be considered proficient. The score on each test
varies. For example, English I students must
score an 80 on the EOC in order to achieve a
level 3.
97. We are on a 4 x 4 block schedule.
- Your child will take four classes each semester.
Final exams in January are for the first semester
classes. The second semester starts on January
25. Your child will take 4 new classes and then
the final exams for these classes will be June 7,
8, 9, and 10.
108. Your child will be a reading buddy.
- Once a month during health/PE classes, we travel
to local elementary schools to read with first
graders.
119. We offer PRIME Time to students who need
extra help.
- PRIME Time is our tutoring program. Beginning
September 17, a bus will run every Tuesday and
Thursday at 330 for anyone who needs to stay
after school for help. (See specific PRIME Time
policies in course descriptions for each
teacher.) - Cardinal Math operates Monday Thursday
afternoons for anyone who needs extra help in
math.
12We want your child to GET INVOLVED _at_JHS.
- They should be part of a club, an organization,
the marching band or a sports team. They should
support sports teams by attending games. We have
wonderful musicals each year. They should be part
of the cast, crew, or pit band.
13Your child is most important to us. We promise to
do all we can to give them the skills that they
need to be globally competitive in the 21st
century!
