BRIEF HISTORY

• Cleansing the bowel is an ancient therapy, dating
  back some 4000 years, where the process of both
  enema and laxative use were described in the
  HINDU VEDAS, which are the oldest known medical
  texts.
• Hippocrates, the famous Greek Doctor and the
  father of Modern Medicine (400 B.C.) left
  behind many writings that were used in medical
  textbooks still used today! He referred to
  various ways of cleaning the intestines and
  described using a bulls horn and a hallow reed
  to administer an enema.

• The Essenes, who lived during the times of New
  Testament, also wrote about bowel health. One of
  the Essene Gospels states that The uncleanness
  within is greater than the uncleanness without.
  And he who cleanses himself without, but remains
  unclean within, is like a tomb that outward is
  painted fair, but is within full of all manner of
  horrible uncleanness and abominations.

• During the 1930s, Dr. Henry A. Cotton, published
  several articles in the Journal of American
  Medical Association, discussing the use of colon
  cleansing and its successful outcomes. What Dr.
  Cotton had observed was a phenomenon called
  autointoxication.

BRIEF HISTORY cont.

• Dr. Arbuthnot Lane, (born in 1929) a well
  respected English physician and colon specialist,
  made the dramatic statement that constipation was
  the cause of all ills of civilization. Through
  his study of scientific evidence, he discovered
  that the relationship between the bowel and the
  maintenance of the healthy body was an intrinsic
  one. Because of his conviction that proper care
  of the colon was essential for the prevention of
  disease, he spent the last 25 years of his life
  dedicated to teaching people how to care for
  their colon.

Our current DILEMA

• In the 1950s colonics flourished. In the 70s
  most colon cleansing devices were removed from
  hospitals and nursing homes.
• Prescriptive laxatives and surgery gain favor.
  The philosophy or practicing medicine changed
  focus from preventative to symptomatic. It became
  easier to treat a symptom as opposed to finding
  the cause of the problem.

DILEMA cont.

• Writing a prescription, and taking a pill is much
  more time effective and thus less expensive than
  hiring personnel to administer a colon therapy
  session. All blame cannot be put on the
  physicians, we (people as a whole) became lazy!
  Our society, in general, began seeking the Magic
  Pill.

HOPE for Today the Future

• Early research and technology have led to
  significant developments.
• A slow gentle administration of water into the
  bowel was effective and able to cleanse the
  entire length of the large intestine all the way
  to the cecum.
• Because low amounts of water are being
  introduced, balances within the bowel were much
  less likely to be disrupted.

• Water was now able to gently enter the bowel and
  seep into the nooks and crannies allowing the
  water to soften and loosen hardened feces.
• By changing the water temperature during the
  course of the session, we are now able to
  stimulate the muscles of the bowel itself, thus
  creating a toning effect, which eliminated the
  possibility of dependency on therapy.

• Equally important was the dual hose delivery
  system and the uniquely designed speculum.
  Practitioners could now administer clean water
  into the bowel while defecation occurs through a
  separate waste hose.
