    reading and math.

2010-2011
  • TAKS test ends for Grades 3-8 after the spring of
    2011
  • The last year of SSI due to the implementation of
    the new STAAR test.

2010-2011 5th grade
  • Students have 3 opportunities to pass the TAKS
    grade 5 reading test and three opportunities to
    pass the TAKS grade 5 math test.
  • Two opportunities during the spring.
  • If not successful in the spring students must
    attend summer school and then are administered
    the 3rd test.

2010-2011 8th grade
  • Students have 3 opportunities to pass the TAKS
    grade 8 reading test and three opportunities to
    pass the TAKS grade 8 math test.
  • Two opportunities during the spring.
  • If not successful in the spring students must
    attend summer school and then are administered
    the 3rd test.

2011-2012
  • STAAR test replaces the TAKS test.
  • With the introduction of the STAAR test, the
    state of Texas does away with SSI for one year
    and both 5th and 8th are administered the STAAR
    test only one time in the spring.

2012-2013
  • The state of Texas reinstates SSI for 5th and 8th
    grade (State Commissioner has not approved SSI as
    of 3/19/13).
  • 5th and 8th graders will have three opportunities
    to pass the STAAR reading and STAAR math test.
  • Two opportunities during the spring.
  • If not successful in the spring students must
    attend summer school and then are administered
    the 3rd test.

2012-2013 ProjectedState Law Requirements
  • Under the SSI grade advancement requirements,
    students are required to pass the State of Texas
    Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) grade 5
    reading and mathematics tests to be promoted to
    sixth grade. Additionally, students are required
    to pass the STAAR grade 8 reading and mathematics
    test to be promoted to 9th grade.

administration)
  • Tuesday April 2nd- 5th and 8th grade STAAR math
    test.
  • Wednesday April 3rd- 5th and 8th grade STAAR
    reading test.
  • If students passes both tests they will not take
    the 2nd administation.

2012-2013 5th 8th grade STAAR testing (2nd
administration)
  • For students that did not pass one or both tests
    on the 1st administration.
  • Tuesday May 14th- 5 8 grade STAAR mathematics.
  • Wednesday May 15th- 5 8 grade STAAR reading.

2012-2013Summer School (accelerated Instruction)
  • Level 3 - June 10th- June 27th
  • For students that did not pass one or both tests
    on the 2nd administration and went to summer
    school for accelerated instruction.

administration)
  • Tuesday June 25th- 5 8 grade STAAR mathematics.
  • Wednesday June 26th- 5 8 grade STAAR reading.

After the 3rd administration 5th 8th graders
  • A student who is unsuccessful on the reading
    and/or mathematics test after the 3rd testing
    opportunity will be retained automatically.

Parents appeal process
  • The parent may appeal the decision to repeat the
    5th or 8th grade.
  • Student must have gone through accelerated
    instruction in summer school.
  • Must submit a request to the Grade Placement
    Committee (GPC) within 5 working days of
    receiving the retention notice.

Grade Placement Committee
  • The GPC may decide to promote a 5th grade
    student to the 6th grade or an 8th grade student
    to the 9th, but only if everyone on the GPC
    agrees that the students is likely to succeed at
    the next grade level.
  • If the student is promoted by the GPC, the
    student will participate in required additional
    instruction in order to be promoted.
