We generate wealth for the people. What comes
from the people must, to the extent possible,
therefore get back to the people. J.R.D. Tata
(1904- 1993)
3
  • Was the 2nd child of Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and
    his French wife Sooni
  • moved to India in 1925
  • In 1938 , JRD Tata was made the head of India's
    largest industrial empire

4
  • Under his leadership, the Tata assets grew from
Rs 62 crore in 1939 to over Rs 10,000 crore in
1990. At the same time, the number of companies
under the group grew from 14 to 50 large
    manufacturing ones

5
  • Apart from being a businessman par excellence, he
was a patron of the sciences and the arts, a
philanthropist and yet a man with a passion for
literature, fast cars, skiing and flying

6
  • JRD's outstanding contributions to India were the
  • -Tata Airlines (1932)
  • -TELCO
  • -TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental
    Research) in 1945

7
  • As an aviator and pioneer flier, he brought
commercial aviation to India. JRD's passion for
planes led him to set up Air India in 1948.
  • When it was nationalised in 1953, under his
chairmanship Air-India was ranked among the
    finest airlines in the world.

8
  • TELCO began with locomotives, but he foresaw it
becoming a great engineering company of which
Tata Iron and Steel Company (Tisco now Tata
    Steel) was the springboard

9
  • Without support provided by Jeh, history would
have been very different. Homi Bhabha may not
have stayed on In India TIFR may not have come
into existence, as it is now
  • Dr. K.R Menon
  • (sucessor of Dr Homi Bhabha)

10
  • And as a philanthropist, he was respected for
building and keeping alive the tremendously
    active Tata charitable trusts

11
  • Leadership, according to him, meant motivating
others. once he was confident that a manager
would perform, he gave him a long rope.
  • "As chairman, my main responsibility is to
    inspire respect

12
  • According to JRD, quality had to match
innovation. He stressed "If you want excellence,
you must aim at perfection. I know that aiming at
perfection has its drawbacks. It makes you go
into detail that you can avoid. It takes a lot of
energy out of you but that's the only way you
    finally actually achieve excellence

13
  • At his behest, Tata Steel became one of the
earliest companies in India to have a dedicated
    human resource department

14
  • JRD was also the first industrialist to move
beyond the welfare of his own workers to that of
the surrounding areas in which the Tata companies
and factories operated. He did not want his
companies to be islands of prosperity in a sea of
    poverty.

15
  • JRD, who was known for his outspokenness and
boldness, made some highly critical comments
about the economic policies of the Central
    Government.
  • JRD's trenchant attack of the government policies
was trimmed down by the reporters of the dailies
to appear very natural and constructive
  • (T.Damu, Vice-President, Taj Group of Hotels )

16
  • It was their highest regard and respect for that
towering personality called JRD that did the job
    silently.

17
  • I saw him as a role model for his simplicity, his
generosity, his kindness and the care he took of
    his employees
  • If at all time stops and asks me what I want from
life, I would say I wish JRD were alive today to
see how the company we started has grown. He
    would have enjoyed it wholeheartedly.
