What is a musical?
  • Any London theatre guide will tell you that
musicals today are the most loved and
    best-attended performances.
  • Musical plays or musicals combine songs and
dances in both traditional and modern styles with
    stories of dramatic interest.

The king of the musical
  • The king of the musical today is Andrew Lloyd
    Webber whose masterpieces Cats, Starlight
Express and Evita are internationally known.
  • His musical career started in the 70s with
Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita and
continued up to the 80s and 90s with Cats and
    Joseph.

  • The songs for his musicals are often very
emotional and the plays are often animated.
  • The most famous animation was the performance of
a story about trains Starlight Express in which

Cats
  • T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) is an English poet and
writer of plays. He won the 1948 Nobel Prize for
    literature.
  • Webbers musical Cats is based on the book by
T.S. Eliot Old Possums Book of Practical Cats
    (?????? ???????. ???????????? ???????????).
  • This musical is about the life of cats that love
    and suffer like people.

10
  • The idea to turn the book into a musical came to
A.L. Webber in 1972 when he picked up the book at
an airport. As he read it, he remembered that his
mother used to read it to him.
  • Some years later, he got his friend, Trevor Nunn,
to help him turn the poetry book into a musical.
    When Nunn
  • and Webber went into a rehearsal, all they
had were parts of songs, and they didnt have a
    story to support it.
  • However, Valerie Eliot (T.S. Eliots widow) found
an old sheet of paper with eight lines about
    Grizabella.
  • It was the very thing that could tie the whole
    show together.

11
  • The original production opened at the New London
Theatre, in the West End on the 11th of May in
    1981.
  • Cats is the longest-running show in the world
history. It has been played in 250 cities in 20
countries and has been translated into 10
    languages.
  • Cats won seven Tony Awards, including the
  • Best Musical.

How Memory appeared
  • That night, Webber went home overnight one of
most famous songs was born. The song was
Memory but at that time, it hadnt any lyrics.
    It was just a melody.
  • Nunn wrote the lyrics and Grizabella had an
emotional outlet. She had left the tribe of
    Jellicle Cats to
  • experience the outside world, remembered the
hard times as she had had.
  • The song told about the past forever lost, and
her desire to return to the tribe.

15
  • The shows most famous song, Memory, has become
one of the most successful songs in
  • the musical history.
  • Since the original recording by Elaine Paige in
June 1981, it has been recorded by over 160
    artists.
  • It has become a classic song and has been
recorded more than six hundred times!
  • Another hit is, of course, Macavity.

Memory (a song)
1) Midnight, see the dew on a sunflower And a
rose that is fading. Roses wither away.
Like the sunflower I yearn to turn my face to the
dawn, I am waiting
for the day. 3) Memory, all alone in
the moonlight I can smile at the
old days. I was beautiful then.
I remember the time I knew what
happiness was.
Let the memory live again.
17
The Beautiful Game
  • The latest success from A.L. Webber (now Lord
Lloyd-Webber after being ennobled in 1996) is
The Beautiful Game, a message musical set in
Northern Ireland combining the national passion
for soccer with a plea for tolerance and peace.
  • The 1960s story about
  • a teenage soccer team
  • and young love won
  • the best musical of
  • the year award.

18
Its interesting to know
