Title: The Phantom of the Opera
1The Phantomof the Opera
2Gaston Leroux, 1868-1927
3The setting of The Phantom of the Opera is the
Paris Opera House--still the largest opera house
in the world.
4Construction began in 1861, but it did not open
until January 5, 1875--fourteen years later!
5The building stood seventeen stories high--seven
below street level--and covered a site of nearly
three acres.
6An underground lake was built deep beneath the
stage in the darkness of the fifth basement, and
water from it was used to operate the hydraulic
stage machinery.

Hanging in the center of the auditorium is the
ornate crystal chandelier, seven tons of
metalwork and glass.
11As shown here, it can be raised into the room
above for cleaning and inspection.
12Phantoms ofthePast
13On April 26, 1925, a silent film pre-miered in
San Francisco starring Lon Chaney as the Phantom.
Theatre managers were warned to have smelling
salts on hand for nervous ladies who were likely
to faint at his awful sight.

15Herbert Lom
In 1962 The Phantom of the Opera was filmed once
more, this time in London. In this version the
Phantom was depicted as a wholly sympathetic
character blamed for the foul deeds of a new
menace, the Dwarf, and he dies trying to save the
heroine from the falling chandelier.

This is from a 1982 version made in Hungary for
CBS television. You may recognize the young lady
who played the young heroine as Jane Seymour, who
recently played the title role in the television
program Dr. Quinn.
18Phantoms of Today!
19 The most recent version of The Phantom of the
Opera is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, a
British theatrical genius who had previously
written Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats.
20 Michael Crawford played the Phantom in this
musical stage production that began in London in
1984 and made its American debut on Broadway in
1988.
