- Plants cannot use nitrogen gas
- Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert nitrogen gas
into ammonia (NH3) - Ammonia and ammonium can be taken up by plants

- Bacteria and fungi carry out ammonification
- conversion of nitrogenous wastes to ammonia
