• These types of fungi are found where there are
  moisture problems.
• Fungi can cause infection, allergy, asthma and
  even systemic body poisoning (called
  mycotoxicosis).
• Exposure can come from skin contact, inhalation
  or ingestion of fungal materials.

History

• Toxigenic fungi and mycotoxins have been found
  throughout United States and Canada over the last
  three years.

Claviceps purpurea

• The earliest known toxigenic fungi is Claviceps
  purpurea.
• This produces the substance ergot.

Importance

• These toxins can save tens of thousand lives each
  year using an enzyme found in the mold
  Penicillium called penicillin.

Revelance

• An old school building in Canada, with toxigenic
  fungi in it, had to be burned.
• Mycotoxins may cause a variety of short-term as
  well as long-term adverse health effects.
