High School vs. Middle School

How to Earn Credits

• 230 credits required for graduation
• earn 5 credits for each semester class you pass
• if you pass 6 classes each semester you will
  earn 30 credits per semester
• at this pace, you will earn 240 credits by
  graduation

• 4 years Language Arts
• 2 years Math including Alg. 1A and 1B or Alg. 1
  Geometry
• 3 years Social Science (grades 10, 11, and 12)
• 2 years Science (1 year Physical, 1 year Life)
• 1 year EITHER Fine Art or Foreign Language
• 1 semester Health and 1 semester Careers (9th
  grade)
• 2 years Physical Education
• 80 elective credits
• 40 hours Community Service
• California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

Pink Registration Form

• Print your name and phone number on top and get
  parent signature.
• Your Language Arts and Math placement are
  determined by district criteria, which includes
  your CST scores, current placement grades.
• All students take one semester of Health and one
  semester of Academic Studies/Career Planning.

Pink Registration Form

• Choose either PE, Dance, PE Band, or Color Guard.
  You will not be put into a sport until you make
  the team. In the meantime, check the PE box.
• Choose 2 electives and 2 alternates from the back
  side of the pink sheet. We will do our best to
  accommodate your elective choices.
• If you are choosing a first-year foreign
  language, indicate your alternate language choice
  . If you are choosing Spanish 2 you do NOT need
  an alternate.

Class Placement and
Homework Expectations

• Class placement is based on 8th grade grades and
  CST scores and varies by subject.
• Expect 30 minutes per night of homework for each
  academic class. Honors classes may require more.
• The computer arranges your schedule of classes.
  We are unable to accommodate teacher requests,
  order of classes, etc.

Medical Science Academy

• Medical Arts I
• Intro to safety, anatomy physiology, infection
  control, body systems, medical terminology, vital
  signs, and CPR certification.
• Medical Arts II
• Patho-physiology (UC approved elective)
  Diseases connected to the body, hand-on testing
  for diseases.
• Medical Arts III
• Medical Assistant Back Office, working with
  patients, doing injections, EKGs, surgical
  set-up.

Engineering Manufacturing Academy

• Two Pathways
• 1. Industry-Certification/Community College
  Pathway
• Take Principles of Engineering and Drafting
  (one semester of Drafting/CAD/CAM and one
  semester of Manufacturing Applications/Metals).
  After this you can take ROP Welding and Metal
  Fabrication, Advanced Manufacturing Applications
  and Technical Skills.
• Engineering Technology-UC/CSU approved
  Engineering Pathway
• Take Principles of Engineering and
  Drafting (one semester of Drafting/CAD/CAM and
  one semester of Manufacturing Applications/Metals)
  , or Pre-Engineering. These courses are followed
  by Engineering Drawing, Advanced CAD/CAM and
  Engineering and Architectural Design.
• Application due to your middle school counselor
  April 12th.

Distinguished Scholars

• Rigorous curriculum of Honors and AP courses.
• 3.5 GPA, Proficient or Advanced on CST tests, no
  D or F grades, good citizenship.
• Must pass 6 Golden State subject exams.
• Applications are available on the Esperanza
  website, www.esperanzahs.com under Bulletin
  Board. Turn in applications to middle school
  counselor by 4/12, EHS counselors will pick up
  during registration.
• Distinguished Scholars diploma and special
  recognition at graduation.
• Great for college applications.

Activities and Getting Involved

• Esperanza offers many activities, clubs, athletic
  teams and other ways to get involved. There is
  something for EVERYONE!
• Be sure to look through the handouts in your
  folder to learn more about some of the
  opportunities available to you. A complete list
  of campus organizations and advisers is in the
  EHS Student Handbook.

Clubs and Activities

• Award winning Speech and Debate, Mock Trial, and
  Academic Decathlon teams among the best in Orange
  County.
• National champion Dance and Cheer teams.
• Sports teams that have won 47 C.I.F.
  Championships over 30 years.
• Over 30 clubs including Red Cross Club, Ecology
  Club, Rock Climbing Club, Best Buddies, Creative
  Impulse, Architecture Club, Art Club, National
  Honor Society, PTSA, etc.

Link Crew
We like to think of it as Freshmen First Day
Thursday, August 22nd from 8 am noon.

• Lunch is included.
• Freshmen get linked up with an upper classman
  who will be their Link Crew Leader for the
  upcoming school year.

Events include

• Introduction to high school including the dos
  and donts.
• Activities with Link Crew Leaders and small group
  of classmates.
• Guided tours of campus.
• Student schedule distribution.
• Turn in paperwork, purchase spirit wear, ASB
  card, yearbook.
• Activities with freshmen and Link Crew Leaders
  will be held throughout the school year.

• The Freshmen Focus campus for freshmen during
  break and lunch.

• Lunch time activities such as music and games
• Smaller environment
• More comfortable setting
