    12

6
A Brief History
  • In 2007, Sunshine College began a school-wide
    literacy program.
  • One of the successful components of the literacy
    program is Reciprocal Teaching.
  • Developed our own Reciprocal Teaching methodology
to address language rich maths problems.

7
Reciprocal Teaching
  • The purpose of Reciprocal Teaching is to
facilitate a group effort between teacher and
students as well as among students in the task of
    bringing meaning to the text.
  • (Department of Education and Early Childhood
    Development, 2009)

Four main areas to Reciprocal Teaching in
Mathematics
The Big Question

think it is about.

work out?
Clarify Words you dont know List all the
helpful information from the problem. List
everything that you need to know to solve the
problem.
Step 4 Turn over to... Solve
Summarise Complete any 3 of these
sentences Im not too sure about this
because.... Next time I wouldnt....... I
helped my group by... My answer makes sense
because... One thing I have learned is... A
better strategy I would use next time is...... I

Reciprocal Teaching
  • Not just about building academic vocabulary.
  • About developing genuine comprehension.
  • Teachers think that once they teach the
vocabulary the problem of comprehension is solved.

15
Comprehension Vs Vocabulary
  • The number of the children at the movies was 5
slash than twong the number of adults.
  • The number of the weans at the movies was 5 more
than twice the number of flaps
  • Decoding
  • Academic Vocabulary
