Where Is the Amazon?

• It is a river, a jungle and a basin in South
  America.

• The river runs through Peru, Venezuela, Brazil,
  Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia.

• It is the largest river in the world by volume.
• It is the second longest river after the Nile.

• It is created by many tributaries, glaciers and
  runoff from the mountains western South America.

• The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean in
  Brazil.
• It experiences rises and falls based upon the
  amount of rainfall in the region. Typically it
  rises from November until June, then falls until
  October.

• Some houses built on the Amazon are built on
  stilts to deal with the changing river heights.

• There are no bridges that cross the Amazon River.
  This is because it is so wide, its borders
  change with annual flooding, and it is in a
  jungle region where there are few roads.

• The Amazon River is surrounded by jungle.
• The jungle has an area of 1.4 billion acres.

• The Amazon is home to many different types of
  plants and animals including
• 2,500,000 insects
• 40,000 plants
• 3,000 fish
• 1,294 birds
• 427 mammals
• 428 amphibians
• 378 reptiles

• Your mission
• Search online for animals that live in the Amazon
  rainforest.
• Choose one you like and find out everything you
  can about it including, but not limited to
• where they live
• what they eat
• how long they live
• what their natural enemies are
• if they are endangered

• Then, report back. Create a flyer about your
  animal including a picture, facts, and links to
  where you found your information.
• We will be creating a book with the information
  about each of your animals. Do your very best to
  let us know what you have learned. Explain
  everything you learn about your animal to us in
  your own words.
