Heart Disease
Heart Disease is the 1 Killer of all adults in
the US!
Arteriosclerosis-a group of diseases that cause
the thickening and hardening of the
arteries. Atherosclerosis- a type of
arteriosclerosis where fatty substances build up
on the inner lining of the arteries.
3High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
A condition where a persons blood pressure stays
at a level that is higher than normal - (140/80
or higher)
This occurs when the coronary artery becomes
blocked, usually by a blood clot. This blockage
prevents blood and oxygen from reaching the
heart, so the tissue dies and the heart may stop
working.
Heart Attack-
- Signs of a heart attack
- Chest pain/discomfort
- Pain in one or both arms,
- back, neck, jaw or stomach
- Shortness of breath
- Other signs include a cold sweat, nausea or
lightheadedness
4Stroke- a serious condition that occurs when
an artery in the brain breaks or becomes blocked.
This prevents the nerve cells in the brain from
getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to
function.
- Warning Signs
- SUDDEN numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg -
especially on one side of the body. - SUDDEN confusion, trouble speaking or
understanding. - SUDDEN trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- SUDDEN trouble walking, dizziness, loss of
balance or coordination. - SUDDEN severe headache with no known cause.
When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities
controlled by that area of the brain are lost.
These abilities include speech, movement and
memory. How a stroke patient is affected depends
on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how
much the brain is damaged
