2BB10A Bioenergetics
Bioenergetics is the study of energy
transformations in biological systems.
We have seen the E-M-P pathway, and noted that
glucose has a higher Gibbs Free energy content
than lactate. As the E-M-P proceeds, some of the
available ?G is used to phosphorylate ADP to make
ATP. The exergonic hydrolysis of ATP is used to
drive necessary endergonic biochemical reactions.

The phosphorylation of ADP to make ATP during
fermentation is called substrate level
phosphorylation, because ADP is a simple enzymic
substrate in such reactions.
8Apart from the ?G available from the catabolism
of nutrient biomolecules, what else is available
to supply energy for biological systems?
