Title: Oxy Fuel Welding Basic Setup

1
Oxy Fuel WeldingBasic Setup Use
  • By Jeremy Hodkiewicz

2
Typical Torch System
  • Oxygen Cylinder
  • Acetylene Cylinder
  • Method of Securing the cylinders
  • Caps
  • Regulators
  • Backflash arrestors
  • Hoses
  • Torch Body
  • Torch Head
  • Torch Tip
  • Clothing and Eye/Face Protection

3
Oxygen Cylinders
  • Oxygen is very pure - 99
  • Pressure is about 2200 psi
  • Forged from a single piece of steel - no welding
    minimum ¼ thick
  • Atmoshere
  • 21 oxygen
  • 78 Nitrogen
  • 1 other (carbon dioxide, argon, helium, water
    vapor)

4
Oxygen Cylinder Safety
  • Valve is a back-seating valve
  • Always open all the way!!!
  • Always transport with safety cap on
  • Tanks should always be safety chained
  • Should valve be broken off tank will become a
torpedo that is capable of breaking through a
    concrete wall!!!

5
Oxygen cylinder sizes
6
Acetylene Cylinders
  • C2H2 - Made from calcium carbide and water
  • Cylinders are filled with monolithic filter
    material
  • 85 porous (Asbestos fibers, balsawood)
  • Cylinders are then filled with Acetylene gas and
    Acetone
  • The acetone absorbs the acetylene and slowly
releases it as it is used
  • Let stand upright at least 20 minutes before
    using
  • Cylinder safety must be safety chained
  • Safety cap must be on when changing tanks.
  • Only open valve ¼ to ½ turns
  • More than 15 PSI Acetylene is very explosive

(No Transcript)
8
Regulators
  • Gauges
  • Tank pressure
  • Working pressure
  • Regulator- adjusts the working pressure

9
Hoses
  • Acetylene Red
  • Notch around nut means LH thread
  • Oxygen Green
  • RH Thread
  • New Hoses have talc inside - Blow out before
    connecting to torch

10
Backflash Arrestor
  • Torch / Manifold
  • Regulator / torch

11
Torch Body
  • Valves control gas flow
  • Final flame adjustment controlled here

12
Setup Procedures
  • Hooking up new cylinder
  • Place new cylinder in rack and hook up safety
    chain
  • Remove safety cap
  • Crack valve open to clean dirt out of valve
  • Hook up regulator (use proper tools)
  • Now see adjustment procedure

13
Setup Procedures
  • Make sure regulator ADJUSTING SCREW IS TURNED OUT
  • Stand to the side of the adjusting screw
  • Open tanks one at a time (Oxygen wide, Acetylene
    1/2 turn)
  • Turn acetylene valve on torch open one turn and
turn regulator screw in until gauge reads
    (3-5psi)
  • Turn oxygen valve on torch open one and turn
regulator screw in until gauge reads (10 psi)

14
Lighting Procedure
  • Open acetylene valve ½ turn
  • Light torch with sparker
  • (do not light with anything else!!!)
  • Adjust acetylene to proper flame
  • Slowly turn on oxygen until a neutral flame is
    obtained
  • Flame temp is about 5500F
  • Steel melts at 2800F

15
Welding Flame Types
Carburizing Flame
Neutral Flame
Oxidizing Flame
16
Shut Down Procedure
  • Turn off acetylene torch valve
  • Turn off oxygen torch valve
  • Turn off tank valves
  • Bleed lines one at a time
  • TURN ADJUSTING SCREWS OUT

17
Oxy-Acetylene Welding
  • Hold blue cone about 1/16-1/8 from metal at a
    15-45 angle
  • Move tip in small circles until a molten puddle
    is formed
  • Slowly push the puddle across the metal

18
Oxy-Acetylene Welding (With Filler Rod)
  • Heat metal until puddle is formed
  • Then hold filler rod about 3/8 from flame
  • Metal will melt off of filler rod and be drawn
    into puddle
  • Slowly push the puddle across the work piece

19
Weld Quality
Torch High
Torch Low
Torch Slow
Torch Fast
OK
20
Welding Troubleshooting
21
Safety
  • Backflash (will make a hissing noise)
  • Turn Oxygen off first
  • Watch where you point your flame (flame temp is
    5500F)
  • Dont blow molten metal toward another person
  • Dont melt the hoses
  • Dont drop metal on hoses
  • Dont let hoses lay on hot metal
  • Only light torch with sparker
