• Heart Foundation established in 1980
• 1 September 2006 it became the Heart and Stroke
  Foundation South Africa
• Community based organisation established to
  educate the people of South Africa about the
  risks for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and to
  help improve their lifestyles by empowering them
  with the knowledge and tools.

• Statistics indicate that one heart attack is
  recorded every 12 minutes a quarter of these
  result in death
• Cardiovascular disease is a disease of lifestyle
  it can be prevented!
• We promote healthy habits from a young age

Hearty Schools Programme

• Consists of grade specific manuals for Grades R -
  7
• Teaching and learning activities that are based
  on Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS)
• A generic document that gives educators a broad
  base of knowledge from which to present the
  activities

  Orientation and Natural Science
• Other learning areas that may be used for
  integration are suggested
• Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards used
  are specific to heart health
• Progression of activities

Launch

• Launched in January 2005 in the Foundation Phase
• Programme funded by Lotto
• Schools accessed via the EMDCs
• Presentation and training provided to Foundation
  Phase representatives at a central venue
• Presentations for Grades 4-7 educators provided
  later
