  • You shall not go about as a talebearer among
your people nor shall you take a stand against
the life of your neighbor I am the LORD.

4
2 Thessalonians 311
  • For we hear that there are some who walk among
you in a disorderly manner, not working at all,
    but are busybodies.

5
Romans 130
  • backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud,
boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient
    to parents,
  • 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God,
that those who practice such things are deserving
of death, not only do the same but also approve
    of those who practice them.

6
Proverbs 1018
  • Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever
    spreads slander is a fool.

7
2 Corinthians 1220
  • For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find
you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by
you such as you do not wish lest there be
    contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath,
    selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings,
    conceits, tumults.

8
1 Timothy 63-4
  • If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent
to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord
Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords
with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing,
but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over
words, from which come envy, strife, reviling,
    evil suspicions.

9
Proverbs 2019
  • He who goes about as a talebearer reveals
secrets Therefore do not associate with one who
    flatters with his lips.

10
1 Timothy 513
  • And besides they learn to be idle, wandering
about from house to house, and not only idle but
also gossips and busybodies, saying things which
    they ought not.

11
The Evil of Gossip
  • You may quickly agree that gossip is a sin, but
are you guilty of redefining terms, making
excuses and calling your evil words good? (cf.
    Isa. 520)

12
Isaiah 520
  • Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil
Who put darkness for light, and light for
darkness Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for
    bitter!

13
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Blatant Denial
  • I Dont Mean to Gossip, But
  • Putting a Disclaimer on it does not change what
    it is
  • Ex I dont mean to steal, but (Doesnt excuse
    the thief)
  • I dont mean to kill, but (Doesnt excuse the
    murderer)
  • 1 Timothy 513 Malachi 313-15

14
1 Timothy 513
  • And besides they learn to be idle, wandering
about from house to house, and not only idle but
also gossips and busybodies, saying things which
    they ought not.

You cant explain away saying things you
shouldnt say!
15
Malachi 313-15
  • Your words have been harsh against Me, Says
the LORD, Yet you say, What have we spoken
against You? 14 You have said, It is useless
to serve God What profit is it that we have kept
His ordinance, And that we have walked as
mourners Before the LORD of hosts? 15 So now we
call the proud blessed, For those who do
wickedness are raised up They even tempt God and
    go free.

Denial will not excuse your accountability before
God!
16
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Secret Pact
  • Promise not to tell anyone Can you keep a
    secret?
  • The whisperer does his work in secret because he
knows he is doing something shameful and wrong
  • Proverbs 1628 John 319-20

17
Proverbs 1628
  • A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer
    separates the best of friends.

18
John 319-20
  • And this is the condemnation, that the light has
come into the world, and men loved darkness
rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light
and does not come to the light, lest his deeds
    should be exposed.

No human whisper is so low that God cannot hear
(cf. Psalm 908)
19
Psalm 908
  • You have set our iniquities before You, Our
secret sins in the light of Your countenance.

20
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Truth Excuse
  • But What Im Saying is True!
  • Even if the tidbit is true, there is no
justification for spreading it if it will tear
someone down, cast evil suspicion, or cause some
to revel in the personal problems of others.
  • 2 Corinthians 26-7 Matthew 1815

21
2 Corinthians 26-7
  • This punishment which was inflicted by the
majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so
that, on the contrary, you ought rather to
forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one
be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

Rather than dwell on the past sins of their
brother, the Corinthians were told to comfort him.
22
Matthew 1815
  • Moreover if your brother sins against you, go
and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

Discretion is always best!
23
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Praise Diversion
  • Hes a nice guy, but did you know?
  • Do you try to offset your gossip by throwing in
    some nice compliment with it?
  • He is an excellent Bible student, but did you
hear about the problems he is having with his
    wife?
  • Proverbs 2019 Psalm 122-3

24
Proverbs 2019
  • He who goes about as a talebearer reveals
secrets Therefore do not associate with one who
    flatters with his lips.

25
Psalm 122-3
  • They speak idly everyone with his neighbor With
flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3
May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, And the
    tongue that speaks proud things.

26
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Enemy License
  • But he did me wrong!
  • Some believe the rules against gossip do not
    apply to their enemies.
  • God said to return evil with Good!
  • Titus 32 1 Thess. 515 Matthew 544-45

27
Titus 31-2
  • Remind them to be subject to rulers and
authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good
work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to be
peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all
    men.

28
1 Thessalonians 515
  • See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone,
but always pursue what is good both for
    yourselves and for all.

29
Matthew 544-45
  • But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those
who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and
pray for those who spitefully use you and
persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your
Father in heaven for He makes His sun rise on
the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the
    just and on the unjust.

30
Common Reasons People Use to Falsely Justify
Gossip!
  • The Counselor Privilege
  • I was just seeking counsel.
  • The scriptures teach that the wise man will seek
counsel (cf. Prov. 1124, in the multitude of
    counselors there is safety.)
  • It is a blessing to be able to go to a respected
brother for advice about a difficult situation
  • However, we must not allow a counseling session
    to become a gossip session!

31
Conclusion
  • Are you guilty of using any of these excuses to
    justify your gossip?
  • And He said to them, You are those who justify
yourselves before men, but God knows your
    hearts (Luke 1615)

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth,
but what is good for necessary edification, that
it may impart grace to the hearers (Ephesians
429).
