  • Conspectus
  • RCO database

4
Overview
  • CAIRNS
  • SCONE database
  • Collaborative Collection Management
  • SCAMP Scottish Collections Access Management
    Portal

5
SCONE
  • Scottish Collections Network Extension
  • RSLP funded two year project
  • Based at the Centre for Digital Library Research

6
Aims
  • The project aims to
  • Expand the coverage of the RCO collection
description database that is the key to
    navigation in the CAIRNS clump
  • Investigate alternative methods of measuring
    collection strength

7
Aims
  • Provide tools to support Collaborative Collection
    Management (CCM)
  • Map Conspectus to other subject schemes.

8
SEED
  • Scottish Executive Education Department Project
  • SCONE sister project
  • Shares a common vision with SCONE for
    developing/managing/accessing the Scottish
    National Collection

9
SEED
  • Aims to
  • Extend the RCO database by adding existing
    subject descriptions of research collections
  • Examine the feasibility of extending this data to
include collections held in public libraries and
    elsewhere in Scotland

10
RCO Database
  • Research Collections Online
  • The original version of RCO is a database that
allows users to identify collection subject
strengths, based on the Conspectus exercise, and
then access (separately) each relevant catalogue.

11
RCO
  • The current RCO database, which is used in CAIRNS
dynamic clumping, not only allows users to go
from subject strengths to individual catalogues,
but also to send the same subject search to all
Z39.50-compliant catalogues using the CAIRNS user
    interface.

12
Conspectus
  • Collection assessment methodology
  • Used by the Scottish University Libraries,
National Library of Scotland, Mitchell Library
    and Edinburgh City Library
  • Will form basis for the collection strengths
measurement exercise in the New Universities

13
Conspectus Hierarchy
  • 25 Divisions
  • 250 Categories
  • 7000 subjects
  • For example
  • LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES
  • LIB 41-86 Library Science Information Science
  • LIB 47 Library Information Networks

14
What is Z39.50
  • Z39.50 is an international standard for
    communication between computer systems primarily,
    library and information related systems
  • It facilitates cross-searching by translating
between the different search and retrieve
    languages used in the clump

15
What is a Clump?
  • A list of databases that share common features
  • A group of cross-searchable Z39.50 catalogues

16
Dynamic Clumping
  • A means of automatically generating different
    mini-clumps for cross-searching - e.g. just those
    catalogues strong in Scottish History
  • Mechanism to aid user navigation in large
    distributed clump
  • User can narrow search to a few key catalogues
    through searching, browsing collections strengths
  • Based on Conspectus exercise

17
CAIRNS
  • Co-operative Academic Information Retrieval
    Network for Scotland
  • Focus for CCM and Dynamic Clumping...
  • Aims
  • Z39.50-based distributed union catalogue
  • a common user interface
  • RCO collection strengths database
  • an subject based dynamic clumping
