  • Welcome to the Student Associates Scheme, a
    national programme funded by the Training and
    Development Agency of Schools. The School of
    Education working in partnership with local
    primary and secondary schools and the Career
    Development and Employment Centre are pleased to
    confirm that as the Sussex Consortium for Teacher
    Education and Research have been awarded funding
    to run the Student Associates Scheme from 2006 -
    2008.The Aims
  • To raise levels of attainment and aspiration of
    young people in schools in relation to learning
    in general, and higher education in particular
  • To contribute to the recruitment of able and
    committed students to initial teacher training

Application for a place on the Student Associate
Scheme
  • Download an Application form from the web site

  • complete it and attach a reference from your
    university tutor
  • return to the address given by the end of
    September 2008

Factors determining acceptance on the scheme
  • Subjects studied at school/ university
  • reference
  • quality of explanation of why you wish to become
    a student associate
  • choice of phase in which you wish to teach

Quotas
  • We have a quota of 77 places (A level or degree
    studies)
  • over 50 for those who can offer secondary
    shortage subjects Maths, Chemistry , Physics,
    Modern Foreign languages
  • 30 for those offering biology, music, RE, DT,
    IT
  • 10 for secondary English, Geog, Hist
  • 10 primary places

SAS programme Aims
  • The central core of the SAS experience is
    involvement with children. The government has
    started a programme called Widening Participation
    which aims to expand Higher Education to more
    people than in the past.
  • One of your tasks is to be a role model for
    Higher education

Programme Aims
  • The student associate scheme also aims to attract
    more people into teaching by giving people an
    opportunity to experience something of teaching.
  • If you decide that you do not wish to teach you
    will still have the opportunity to develop
    transferable skills

Training Days
  • Each Student Associate who applies is invited for
    interview in the Autumn term
  • Those offered a bursary are expected to attend a
    minimum total of three training sessions which we
    run in the Autumn term.
  • Their placement school will provide an induction
    day.
  • Placements can be completed between the end of
    February and the end of July.

School Based Experience
  • Each Student Associate is expected to complete 15
    days in a school/college.
  • This time in schools can be spent either in week
    blocks during vacations or on certain days each
    week. It is up to the member of staff and
    individual student associate to agree the format
    and timing.
  • Most of the days in school will involve
    supporting a classroom teacher but student
    associates are asked to complete a special
    project - raising awareness of Higher Education

Administration
  • TDA Registration
  • In order to receive your pay you have to be
    registered with the Training and Development
    Agency for Schools directly on-line.
    www.dta.gov.uk/sasregistration When you have
    completed the on-line data collection form, you
    will be given a registration number.
  • You must enter this number on your pay claim.
  • NO TDA NUMBER, NO PAY!!

CRB Applications
  • Criminal Records Bureau checks must be completed
    and clearance given before any school based
    experience can begin.
  • CRBs are only valid for the SAS if issued by the
    ITE Office at Sussex
  • CRBs can take a long time to complete please
    return these as a matter of urgency
  • Read ALL the guidance first

School Based Experience Allocations
  • Schools placements will be discussed during your
    interview with one of the co-ordinators.
  • We will try to accommodate your needs but please
    recognise that SBE placements can be limited

Getting Paid!
  • Student Associates are paid a tax free bursary of
    40 a day for a total of 15 days.
  • A contribution to travel costs may be available
    if the placement involves a considerable journey.
  • The cost of a CRB check ( 36.00 ) is refunded
    after the scheme is completed.

Assessment The TEP
  • This Training Entry Profile (TEP) is intended for
    anyone interested in training to become a teacher
    in England. The TEP is a record of the prior
    experiences and/or achievements of those starting
    teacher training, and provides their future
    training providers with examples of the range of
    settings, programmes and contexts in which these
    were gained.
  • It consists of your folder organised in the light
    of requirements for QTS.
