Impact of the Port on the economics of the country

Impact of the Port on the economics of the country

    we can propose a product to the market which is
    cheaper than that of competitors)

Where is the problem ?
  • Cargo flow increases (6 years 10 million
    tons) more territory is necessary
  • Tonnage of vessels increases bigger depth is
    necessary
  • Without the expansion of territory and dredging
    of water territory we will loose the market and
    the income. The money we lost would become the
    income of neighboring ports.

Klaipeda Port development alternatives
  • Very narrow channel in the zone of the Harbour
    Entrance allows only one-sided traffic for the
    majority of ships. Besides, the navigation space
    is limited for the turning of ships in the
    internal channel.
  • As the cargo flows increase, present port
    capacities will not be sufficient even if all
    existing and reserved port territories are
    operated.
  • Dredging of the southern part of the port is not
    acceptable from the environmental point of view
    due to the intrusion of the brackish water into
    the Curonian Lagoon (ecological system may be
    destroyed, present residential areas might be
    occupied by marine fauna and flora).

Advantages of deep-water port
  • Anticipated essential positive impact
    Increased cargo turnover due to better
    competitiveness (water depth, new territories)
    will turn into additional income for the
    population, Klaipeda municipality and the
    Republic of Lithuania. Huge investments used
    for the construction of the port will increase
    the income of construction companies and their
    employees. New possibilities for the
    development of small business will be created.
    Possibility to construct liquid gas terminal.
    This would reduce energetic dependence of
    Lithuania on limited number of suppliers.Expecte

    land areas in Melnrage were sold for record
    price, Memel city executes the project of housing
    in the very middle of port following the
    prognosis of international company that just in
    the centre of Klaipeda Port the price of real
    estate will be the biggest in the Republic of
    Lithuania
