Title: Section A

1
Section A
  • Questions and Answers
  • Mr McDonald

2
What we will learn today
  • Types of questions
  • How to answer them for different grades
  • Tips and Ideas

3
Question 1 (a)
  • This question will startHow does Source A
help you... or What does Source A suggest
  • Both questions are asking for the same type of
    skill

4
Question 1 (a)
  • This is a comprehension and inference question.
  • This means to do well, you select details from
the source and explain what that tells you by
    referring to the question.

5
June 2004
  • How does Source A help you to understand the
importance of religion in treating sick people
in the early Middle Ages? (5)
  • Target Comprehension and inference from an
    historical source (AO6.2)
  • Level 2 Answer that draws a simple inference
from source e.g. religion was more important
than herbs because it says you should not just
trust herbs, but use religion as well. 3-4

6
June 2004
  • Level 3 Answer that develops a complex
inference from source e.g. monks knew everything
about herbs and treating people who were ill.
They believed everything was made by God so
cures came from God. This made religion very
important. Without it they did not think they
    would be successful. 5

7
Simple vs. Complex
  • What is the difference between the simple
    inference and complex?
  • The more complex answer focuses on critical
understanding - placing the inference within the
    thinking of the time.

8
Question 1 (b)
  • This question will usually be concerned with a
    change (progress).
  • It will also focus on getting you to deploy your
knowledge based on the source and your own
    revised knowledge.

9
June 2005
  • How does Source B show progress in surgery since
1900? Explain your answer using Source B and your
    own historical knowledge.
  • Target Identifying progress from an historical
source (AO 6.1 and AO 6.2)
  • Level 2 Answer based on simple reasoning
  • e.g. Surgery has progressed greatly because one
development has led to another. The heart/lung
machine made organ replacement surgery possible

10
June 2005
  • Level 3 Answer based on Developed Reasoning
  • e.g. Source B shows there has been progress
because different factors have come together.
Infection was conquered by aseptic surgery. Only
after the heart lung/machine had been invented
could organ replacement take place. Christiaan
Barnard performed the first heart transplant in
1967. By 1990 there were 2000 successful in the
    USA alone.

11
Question 1 (b)
  • So, what makes a good answer.
  • The key words to look out for are progress or
    change.
  • You really have to cite examples and explain
    their significance.
  • Elements of source and own knowledge are required
    to get a Level 3.

12
Question 1 (c)
  • This is the contrast question. It requires you to
look at two sources and highlight not only what
the differences are but also why they are
    different.
  • Like the other 2 questions, this question only
goes up to a level 3.

13
June 2005
  • Source C suggests there has been progress in
fighting diseases through the use of medical
    drugs since 1900.
  • Source D suggests that there has been no real
    progress.
  • Why do you think these two sources disagree
about the progress made in fighting diseases
    since 1900?
  • Explain your answer using Sources C and D and
    your own knowledge.
  • Explaining differences between two sources (AO
    6.1 and AO6.2)

14
How to answer this type of question
  • Level 2 Answer based on simple reasoning for
    disagreement.
  • Source D is only a cartoon about the common
cold. It focuses on only one part of medicine,
unlike Source C which comments more generally.

15
How to answer this type of question
  • Level 3 Answer based on developed reasoning for
    disagreement.
  • As source C states, there has been great
progress in conquering disease. Magic bullets
were first developed in the early twentieth
century. Penicillin was developed during the
Second World War by Florey and Chain and this had
led to the conquering of many infectious
diseases. However some diseases have still not
been conquered, like AIDS and the common cold, as
    shown in Source D.
  • Source D is looking at a very limited area of
medicine where there hasnt been much progress,
but Source C has a wider overview. Thats why
    they seem to disagree.

16
The differences
  • It is not just the length of the answer.
  • The examples cited are more developed
  • This means greater explanation can be given.
  • The other factor that lends itself more to a good
level three is the use of own knowledge.
  • You cannot get a top Level 2 or Level 3 without
use of own knowledge - it is worth 1 mark in
    level 2 and 1 in level 3.

17
Skills rev 2
  • Mr McDonald

18
Question 1 (d)
  • Question 1d is a agree or disagree question but
it isnt really. To get a good answer you need to
    have a balanced judgement.
  • Look at the 2005 paper first it requires own
    knowledge and use of sources.
  • Remember to use both. Just using one of these
    will limit your marks considerably.

19
Question 1(d) Markscheme
  • Level 2 requires you to make an argument with
either sources or own knowledge. You can either
have a balanced judgement or a single sided
judgement but to get top marks at this you need
    have a good overall judgement(conclusion).
  • Typical Level 2 marks are 4-8 out of the 15 so if
you get an 8 then you are over 50.

20
Question 1(d) Markscheme
  • Level 3 requires you to make an argument with
sources and own knowledge. Again you need to make
sure you have a conclusion in your answer that
    answers the question.
  • If you only look at one side then you will get a
    bottom level three answer.
  • Level Three answers get between 9 and 12 marks.

21
Question 1(d) Markscheme
  • Level 4 requires you to compare the factors or
show how they were interlinked. This means you
cannot go far a straight forward It did help, on
the other hand it didnthere is what I think.
  • Top Level Four marks get 13 to 15 marks.

22
Hints and Tips
  • This question will have a statement. Read that
carefully and annotate it with brief ideas such
    as key individuals and events.

23
Possible 1d style questions
  • Vesalius made the greatest advances in anatomy
during the Renaissance. Use the sources and your
own knowledge to explain why you agree or
    disagree with this interpretation.You could
also change this to Harvey or Johannes Guinter.
This is a individual question designed to focus
on factors and other individuals. Based on 2003.

24
Possible 1d style questions
  • Individuals made the greatest change in the
development of Renaissance anatomy. Use the
sources and your own knowledge to explain why you
agree or disagree with this interpretation. This
is a theme question designed to compare factors.
    Based on 2004 and 2005.
