Title: Biotic Factors

1
Biotic Factors
  • A biotic factor any living thing in an ecosystem.

2
Food Chains
  • A food chain is a simple diagram that shows the
feeding relationships that exist in an ecosystem.
Food chains like this one are helpful for
showing how energy moves through an ecosystem.
  • A producer is an organism that can capture
energy, such as sunlight, and use it to make
    nutrients.
  • A consumer is an organism that cannot make its
own nutrients. Therefore, a consumer must eat
another organism to obtain nutrients. A consumer
that eats a producer is called a primary consumer.

3
Food Webs
  • A food web is an illustration showing the
interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.

4
Energy Pyramids
  • The flow of energy through an ecosystem can be
    illustrated in an energy pyramid.
  • The organisms in each level of the pyramid have
less energy available to them than the organisms
    in the level below.

5
Abiotic Factors
  • Abiotic factors are the nonliving components of
an ecosystem. These components include the
temperature, the availability of oxygen, the
amount of moisture, sunlight, and nitrogen. They
    also include soil and rocks.
  • Soil consists of a mixture of rock fragments, the
remains of decayed organisms, water, and air.
The presence of abiotic factors can vary at
different times within the same biome.
  • Some abiotic factors are recycled and reused in
an ecosystem. These factors include water,
    oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen.

6
Metamorphosis
  • Metamorphosis is the process that insects undergo
as their bodies change. Insects are not the only
animals to develop through metamorphosis. Frogs
also undergo metamorphosis in this order Eggs,
larva, pupa (tadpole), and finally an adult frog.
  • Incomplete metamorphosis is a process in which
young insects hatch from an egg in an immature
form that looks somewhat like the adult. The
immature form is called a nymph.
  • Complete metamorphosis is a process in which an
insect undergoes two stages of development
between the egg and the adult.
