Whats your Air Quality IQ?
1. What gas is the most prominent greenhouse
gas produced from human activities?
  • Oxygen
  • Water Vapor
  • Ethane
  • Carbon Dioxide

6
Whats your Air Quality IQ?
What compound of oxygen is beneficial at high
altitudes, but harmful at low altitudes?
  • CFC
  • Ozone
  • Argon
  • Methane

7
Whats your Air Quality IQ?
Smog (Ozone) Forming Emissions Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
Carbon Dioxide Emissions in New Hampshire Climate
Change
What category of sources is the major source of
air pollution in the United States?
  • Cars and Trucks
  • Power Plants
  • Household Products
  • Industries

8
Whats your Air Quality IQ?
Cars that run on which of the following fuels
cause the least air pollution?
  • Gasoline
  • Natural Gas
  • Beer
  • Electricity

9
Whats your Air Quality IQ?
Which of the following air pollutants come from
cars and trucks?
  • Volatile Organic Carbons (VOCs)
  • Nitrogen Oxides
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Particulate Matter (soot)
  • Air toxics
  • All of the Above
  • None of the Above

Cars and Trucks Pollute
Evaporative Emissions
Refueling Losses
Exhaust Emissions
11
Options to Reduce Emissions from Cars and Trucks
  • New engine standards and technologies, higher
    fuel economy
  • Fuels alternative (primarily CNG), biodiesel
  • Anti- idling and voluntary compliance efforts

12
New Hampshires Approach Outreach and Education
  • N.H. Clean School Bus Idling Reduction Campaign
  • Compliance Assistance Program for Fleet Owners
and Operators Includes Smoke Opacity and Idling
    for Truck Fleets
  • Overall anti-idling campaign for everyone.

13
Diesel exhaust Why worry?
  • Diesel exhaust contains harmful pollutants
  • Particulate matter (PM or small particles)
    penetrate deep into lungs
  • Linked to asthma and other significant health
problems (decreased lung function, heart disease)
  • Classified by Federal agencies as a probable
    human carcinogen
  • Diesel exhaust (and other mobile source
    emissions) can get into buildings
  • Air intakes, windows, doors
  • From school buses, delivery vehicles, cars

14
Other Health and Environmental Effects of Diesel
Exhaust
  • Offensive odor of diesel exhaust.
  • NOx contributes to ozone formation (smog) a
    respiratory irritant.
  • NOx and sulfur dioxide contribute to acid rain.
  • Small particles contribute to haze which
    restricts visibility.
  • CO2 contributes to global climate change.

15
Why focus on School Buses?
  • Diesel Exhaust is more harmful to children
  • Respiratory systems are not fully developed.
  • Children breathe 50 percent more air per pound of
    body weight than adults.
  • Children with asthma are susceptible to even very
slight increases in small particle levels.
  • Research studies show increased impacts of diesel
exhaust on children who ride school buses.
  • Number 1 recommendation REDUCE IDLING!

A win-win opportunity for everyone!
16
Why focus on Hospitals?
  • You fill in the blanks!

17
Why worry about trucks?Did you know that . . . .
  • The average truck sits idling for up to 2,500
    hours a year.
  • This equates to a yearly cost of 4,000
  • This is equivalent to an additional 200,000 miles
    in terms of engine wear
  • One hour of idling burns a gallon of diesel fuel.
  • Just by idling, on the national level trucks
    produce
  • 10 million tons of carbon dioxide
  • 60,000 tons of nitrogen oxides
  • 100,000 tons of carbon monoxide

18
NHs Approach Focus on the Benefits of Not
Idling
  • Saves fuel and money
  • Reduces wear and tear on engine
  • Improves air quality in immediate vicinity
  • Reduces pollution
  • Protects health of passengers and drivers
  • Good neighbor policy!

19
Reducing Idling is Easy and Cost Effective!
  • Limit idling time during vehicle warm up
(generally 1 3 minutes in winter) and follow
manufacturers guidelines for proper warm-up and
    cool-down procedures.
  • Turn engines off when you reach your destination
and whenever you are parked for more than 10
seconds (10 second rule use common sense!).

20
Reducing Idling is Easy and Cost Effective!
  • When idling is necessary, limit according to
    state regulations
  • Above 32 idle no more than 5 minutes
  • Between -10 and 32 no more than 15 minutes
  • Below -10 no limit

21
Whats Next?
  • More efforts at the local level schools,
    government, businesses, and HOSPITALS.
  • Make your business campus, community or school a
    Clean Air Zone
  • Increased efforts at truck stops and truck
    refueling sites.
  • More emphasis on anti-idling campaign for
    everyone.

22
What You Can Do
  • Implement Idling Reduction Practices at home and
    at work.
  • Identify barriers and be creative problem
    solvers.
  • Follow idling restrictions when possible Take
    the Pledge for 2006!
  • Keep up the good work!

Be a Clean Air Driver!
23
Take the Pledge!
  • Pledge to Reduce Idling
  • I
    pledge to
  • 1. Turn the engine off whenever possible.
  • Limit morning start-up time (generally 1 to 3
minutes in winter) and follow manufacturers
guidelines for proper warm-up and cool-down
    procedures.
  • Follow state regulations when idling is
    necessary.
  • Learn more about implementing
  • idle-reduction programs and policies at my
    business and in my community.
