one you think shows the best results, and you
then see which answers are from which engines.

20How to read a web addressFirst, you need to know
how to read a web address, or URL (Universal
Resource Locator). Let's look at the URL for this
tutorial http//www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/page
s/bones/bones.shtml
21http//www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/pages/bones/bon
es.shtml
- "http" means hypertext transfer protocol and
refers to the format used to transfer and deal
with information - "www" stands for World Wide Web and is the
general name for the host server that supports
text, graphics, sound files, etc. (It is not an
essential part of the address, and some sites
choose not to use it) - "sc" is the second-level domain name and usually
designates the server's location, in this case,
the University of South Carolina - "edu" is the top-level domain name (see below)
- "beaufort" is the directory name
- "library" is the sub-directory name
- "pages" and "bones" are folder and sub-folder
names - the second "bones" is the file name
- "shtml" is the file type extension and, in this
case, stands for "scripted hypertext mark-up
language" (that's the language the computer
reads). The addition of the "s" indicates that
the server will scan the page for commands that
require additional insertion before the page is
sent to the user.
22Here is a list of the domains that have been in
operation for the past several years and are
generally accepted by all
- .edu -- educational site (usually a university or
college) - .com -- commercial business site
- .gov -- U.S. governmental/non-military site

web pages is to master Google's Advanced Search

browser's toolbar so that it's always available. - Four NETS for Better Searching Website

29Net 4 Look for Similar Pages
- Once you've found something you like on Google,
it's very easy (and useful) to find similar
pages. - How?
- Below the advanced search fields that you've been
using up until now are another two fields. These
allow you to find pages that Google has deemed to
be similar to or linked to any URL you type in.
30Specific Types of Documents
- PDF - service oriented architecture filetypepdf
- PPT - service oriented architecture filetypeppt
- DOC - service oriented architecture filetypedoc
31http//www.noodletools.com/index.php
32Basic Google Search
- Every word matters. All the words you put in the
query will be used. Some exceptions see STOP
WORDS. - Search is always case insensitive. new york
times is the same as searching for New York
Times . - With some exceptions, punctuation is ignored
(that is, you can't search for _at_()\ - Keep it simple
- Use the words that are most likely to appear on
the page my head hurts , say headache - Describe what you need with as few terms as
possible - weather report for cancun mexico weather
cancun
33What Are Stop Words?Some search engines don't
record extremely common words in order to save
space or to speed up searches. These are known as
"stop words." Below is a SHORT list of words
Ignored by Search Engines.
by com de enfor fromhow
- I a about an are as at
- be
in is it la of on or that
who will withundthewww
the thisto was what whenwhere
34- The title The first line of any search result is
the title of the webpage. - The snippet A description of or an excerpt from
the webpage. - The URL The webpage's address. Cached link A
link to an earlier version of this page. - Click here if the page you wanted isn't
available.
35More search help
- Phrase search ("") Putting double quotes around a
set of words, tells Google to consider the exact
words - Search within a specific website (site)Google
allows you to specify that your search results
must come from a given website. For example, the
query - iraq sitenytimes.com will return pages
about Iraq but only from nytimes.com. - Terms you want to exclude (-)
- Attaching a minus sign immediately before a word
indicates that you do not want pages that contain
this word to appear in your results. - should
appear immediately before the word and should be
preceded with a space. For example, in the query
anti-virus software , the minus sign is used
as a hyphen and will not be interpreted as an
exclusion symbol whereas the query anti-virus
-software will search for the words
'anti-virus' but exclude references to software.

82Why Did The American Colonists Revolt?Thomas Ash
83- A complex mythology has been built up around the
American Revolution it is a national story of
great significance to the way the United States
views itself. But the mythology is just that - a
mythology. Contrary to the picture presented in
American primary schools, the Americans were not
a separate, turkey-eating people, subjugated by
the cruel, tyrannical and essentially foreign
British. In fact, many colonists thought of
themselves as British. Historians accept that the
American Revolution had a wide variety of motives
and causes these included slightly differing
political traditions, the economic interests of
both parties, the trading interests of those
directly or indirectly involved in transatlantic
commerce, the large debt Britain had accumulated
in the wake of the Seven Years War, and a fair
amount of mutual misunderstanding as well.

- Improve Your Search Experience
- In addition to providing easy access to billions
of web pages, Google has many special features to
help you to find exactly what you're looking for.
Some of our most popular features are listed
below.
99- Weather To see the weather for many U.S. and
worldwide cities, type "weather" followed by the
city and state, U.S. zip code, or city and

given company or fund, type the ticker symbol
into the search box. On the results page, you can
click the link to see more data from Google
Finance. Example  CSCO
101Keep track of the stocks
- With the booming stock market it is very
important to track the stocks on a day to day
basis. Putting a stock ticker in the search box
is the most obvious thing you would think of. But
it is not always you would remember the stock
ticker, you should add the keyword stocks to
the company name. - The best part of the obtained result is that it
provides a chart which shows the trend in the
companys stock along with important statistics. - stocks INFY
- Note Currently the results are restricted to the
companies listed in the US stock markets.
102- Time To see the time in many cities around the
world, type in "time" and the name of the city.

104- Unit Conversion You can use Google to convert
between many different units of measurement of
height, weight, and mass among others. Just enter
your desired conversion into the search box and
well do the rest. Example  10.5 cm in inches
105- Dictionary Definitions To see a definition for a
word or phrase, simply type the word "define"
then a space, then the word(s) you want defined.
To see a list of different definitions from
various online sources, you can type "define"
followed by a word or phrase. Note that the
results will define the entire phrase. Example
 Define philosophy
106- Currency Conversion To use our built-in currency
converter, simply enter the conversion youd like
done into the Google search box and well provide
your answer directly on the results page. - Example  150 GBP in USD
107- Fill in the Blank Sometimes the best way to ask
a question is to get Google to fill in the
blank by adding an asterisk () at the part of
the sentence or question that you want finished
into the Google search box. Example Isaac
Newton discovered
108Scholarly Search
- For this use the Google scholar search. But

about it. - definebeureaucracy
110Google Gulp http//www.google.com/googlegulp/
- At Google our mission is to organize the world's
information and make it useful and accessible to
our users. But any piece of information's
usefulness derives, to a depressing degree, from
the cognitive ability of the user who's using it.
That's why we're pleased to announce Google Gulp
(BETA) with Auto-Drink (LIMITED RELEASE), a line
of "smart drinks" designed to maximize your
surfing efficiency by making you more
intelligent, and less thirsty. - Â
