8Why cant most university inventions be
commercialized?
9A Question Of OTL Focus
- Why patent university inventions?
- Answer 1 To allow the university to make some
return on its investment and participate in the
financial upside. - Answer 2 To permit industry to successfully
commercialize the invention for the benefit of
society.
Business University OTL Should Be On The Same
Side!
10Why such a low hit rate?
- Universities develop technologies not products.
- If we agree on the above, why do we want to
measure our success developing technologies by
measuring how many licenses weve spawned? - Whats missing?
A Focus On Customer Needs
11Identifying The Right NeedThe Genetic Code Of
The Project
- Frame The Problem
- Understand The Objective
- Specify The Parameters ? Need Spec
12How to bridge the gap?...
- Do we really want to?
- If we do, then we must lower barriers
- Conflict of Interest Management Not Avoidance
- Bring In Industry As Teachers / Mentors /
Collaborators - Focus on real problems and stay close to the
need - Recognize what universities do well and stay true
to the academic research mission
