National Health Examination Survey The
Beginning

• July 3, 1956 ---- National Health Survey Act
  authorizing a continuous survey to provide
  statistical data on the amount, distribution, and
  effects of illness and disability in the U.S.
• Established a Health Interview Survey with
  periodic special surveys based on health
  examinations (the Health Examination Survey)
• Also proposed health records survey

to a Reality

• Planning during 1957 and 1958
• Decision to use mobile examination centers
• Three pilots in 1958 and 1959
• Survey begins in October 1959
• NCHS formed in 1960
