Books
  • There are lots and lots out there.
  • Be Careful! Some books contain inaccurate
    information.
  • Your local RCC or FV shelter can recommend books.

16
Video resources
  • There are many good videos and films out there.
  • Most good educational videos come from a few
    companies (Sunburst Educational Films, Human
    Relations Media, AIMS Multimedia).
  • Some are theatrical release movies

17
A Must-Have Movie
  • Searching for Angela Shelton
  • Documentary about one womans confrontation of
her past childhood sexual abuse (and her abuser).
  • A moving experience for survivors and those who
    care about them.
  • NOT for kids! Contains frank language about
    sexual abuse.

18
Periodicals
  • Range from scholarly journals to professional
    publications and newsletters.
  • Ask your local rape crisis enter or FV shelter to
put you on their mailing list.

19
Working with patrons who ask about VAW
  • Its a tricky situation.
  • Patrons could be victims, students, or
    researchers.
  • Why questions are usually not recommended.
  • A good rule give everyone information on local
    and national hotlines.

20
What to do in case of a disclosure
  • Child Check with your administration. Child
Service Agency Personnel are required by law to
report to DFCS. This could be construed to mean
    libraries (OCGA 19-7-5).

21
  • Adult
  • Try to conduct your reference interview in a
    non-public area.
  • Absolutely avoid why questions.
  • Offer options (mainly hotline numbers) but leave
the decision up to the patron.
  • Remember, violence is never the victims fault.
React with empathy, calmness, and total
acceptance. Believe the victim. You have an 85-90
    chance she is not lying.

22
Things to do ahead of time
  • Get brochures from your local RCC or FV shelter.
They are usually happy to give you a large
quantity of them free of charge.
  • Have your local RCC or FV shelter provide
training for your staff. They are usually happy
to do this free of charge.

23
  • Promote awareness by observing Sexual Assault
Awareness Month (April) and Domestic Violence
Awareness Month (October). Your local RCC or DV
shelter can help you with ideas and assistance.
