GTIN Overview
  • The GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the
foundation for the EAN.UCC System for uniquely
identifying trade items (products and services)
    sold, delivered, warehoused, and billed
throughout the retail and commercial distribution
    channels
  • GTIN is an accurate, efficient and economical
means of controlling the flow of products and
information through the use of an all-numeric
    identification system
  • You run in GTINs everyday because they are
encoded in U.P.C. and EAN-13 symbols and they are
also a key component of e-commerce transactions

5
Key Benefits
  • Uniqueness - GTIN identifies an item uniquely
  • Non-significance - GTIN numbering structure does
not contain any meaningful information in itself
  • Multi-Sectored - GTINs are unique across all
    business sectors
  • International - GTINs are unique worldwide
  • Security - Provided through a combination of
database lookup and the fixed length, numeric
format that includes a standard Check Digit
  • Data Integrity - The Check Digit ensures the
integrity of data passing into the system
  • Automatic Data Capture - It can be encoded in
many automatic data capture technologies (I.e. a
bar code or RF ID Tags)

6
Types of GTINs
  • GTIN data structures
  • Globally unique 8,
  • 12, 13, and 14- digit
  • numbers identify trade
  • Items (product or service)

7
Types of GTINs (Cont)
  • The GTIN may be encoded in EAN/UPC, ITF-14, and
    UCC/EAN-128 symbologies

8
Types of GTINs (Cont)
9
Types of GTINs (Cont)
  • GTIN in a UCC/EAN-128 bar code

10
Types of GTINs (Cont)
  • GTIN in an ITF-14 bar code

Oracle Mobile Apps and GTIN
  • GTIN allows Oracle Mobile transactions to be done
by scanning one part of its data structures in
    bar-coded format
  • When scanned in the item field, Oracle Mobile
Apps converts it into GTIN by right justifying
and zero filling it into a 14-digit field
  • The 14-digit number is used to lookup the item,
revision and its packaging configuration in a
    GTIN cross-reference table
  • If a match is found, the referenced item is
substituted in the item field and revision if
    populated
  • If a EAN.UCC-14 is scanned the transaction Unit
    of measure is also substituted
  • With picking tasks, the suggested pick quantity
is recomputed in terms of the transaction UOM

12
Oracle Setup
  • Define an item cross-reference type in the Cross
    Reference Types window

13
Oracle Setup (Cont.)
  • Set profile value INV GTIN Cross Reference Type
to type defined in previous step. This is a site
    level profile

14
Oracle Setup (Cont.)
  • 3. A mapping between the internal item and the
GTIN code needs to be setup. In the GTIN cross
reference type, set the mapping between internal
item numbers and their corresponding GTIN codes
in the Assign Cross References window. An item
may have more than one GTIN code, each maps to a
different EAN.UCC structure. A structure that is
less than 14 digits has to be right justified to
14 digits and padded by leading zeros

  • UOM conversions for Carton, Case and Retail

17
Mobile Transactions
  • 4. You can now do a mobile transaction with a
GTIN code. In the Item field in any Mobile Supply
Chain / Warehouse Management mobile page, you can
scan in either an internal item number or a GTIN
code. If a GTIN code is scanned the system will
translate it to its internal item according to
the cross-reference definition. This will display
in the field. If a GTIN code is exactly the same
as an internal item number, both records will
display in the LOV to enable you to select which
    item is to be transacted.

  • REMEMBER!
  • The cross-reference field must be 14 digits. If
the scan is less than 14 digits the MSCA right
justifies and zero pads to create a 14 digit
field that is used to search the cross reference.
