Title: Genetically Modified Organisms

2So Different, Same DNA
Corey B.
- This small mural shows how corn and people are
linked by their DNA. Both corn and people are
living things with A, T, G, and C. The computer
can be used to help the scientists calculate how
much DNA to take out of the corn.

3GM Mosquitoes
Devin A.
- Mosquitoes bite people all over the world. Some
people get the disease malaria from their
mosquito bites. Scientists are trying to make
mosquitoes that either cant pass the disease on
or cant get infected with the disease
themselves. Scientists think that they would
only have to create a few of these special
mosquitoes and their genes would be passed on
when they mate in the wild.

4Glowing Red Fish
Dedre H.
Yorktowne Technologies has bred these and
infected them with a gene to give them their
red color. Although they are pretty, they were
created with a purpose. Their color is only
supposed to show when there are certain chemicals
in the water. When they change color, the
scientists know that the chemical level in the
water is getting too high. Really these fish are
pollution detectors.

5Take a Shot or Eat a Banana?
Zach A.
- We might get that choice sometime soon.
Scientists are working on a way to insert the
polio vaccine in to bananas. When people eat the
bananas they get vaccinated at the same time. I
dont know about you, but Ill take the bite.

6Oliver
Chris I.
- This is Oliver. He is a chimpanzee that was
first seen in the 1970s. Some people think he is
a cross between a human and a chimp. But nobody
wants to come forward and say for real. His
chromosomes were looked at, but the scientist
could tell. He smokes cigarettes, doesnt like
to socialize with other chimps, and always walks
on two legs. I wonder what we would get if we
did take some human DNA and put it in a chimpor
the other way around. I really think Oliver has a
human father and a chimp mother.
