Title: Living Sanctified Lives that Please the Lord
1Living Sanctified Lives that Please the Lord
Presented by Bob DeWaay February 26, 2006
2Pauls Pattern Doctrine Then Ethical Exhortations
- 1Thessalonians 41
- Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort
you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you received from
us instruction as to how you ought to walk and
please God (just as you actually do walk), that
you may excel still more.
3Pleasing the Lord was Pauls Motive
- 1Thessalonians 24
- but just as we have been approved by God to be
entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as
pleasing men but God, who examines our hearts.
4Paul Uses the Term Walk for the Whole of Ones
Life
- Ephesians 58-10
- for you were formerly darkness, but now you are
light in the Lord walk as children of light (for
the fruit of the light consists in all goodness
and righteousness and truth), trying to learn
what is pleasing to the Lord.
5Paul Does Not Want Them to Fall Into the Immoral
Practices of the Pagans
- 1Thessalonians 42, 3
- For you know what commandments we gave you by
the authority of the Lord Jesus. For this is the
will of God, your sanctification that is, that
you abstain from sexual immorality
6Immoral Behavior Degrades the Person and
Dishonors the Creator
- 1Thessalonians 44
- that each of you know how to possess his own
vessel in sanctification and honor,
7The Christian Must Be Distinctively Different
Than the World
- 1Thessalonians 45
- not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do
not know God
8Immorality Hurts Others
- 1Thessalonians 46
- and that no man transgress and defraud his
brother in the matter because the Lord is the
avenger in all these things, just as we also told
you before and solemnly warned you.
9All Those Called are Called to Live Sanctified
Lives
- 1Thessalonians 47
- For God has not called us for the purpose of
impurity, but in sanctification.
10Pauls Inspired Words Carry Gods Authority
- 1Thessalonians 48
- Consequently, he who rejects this is not
rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy
Spirit to you.
11Applications
- Do not love the world.
- Know the difference between Gods moral will and
providential will. - Make efforts to grow in sanctification.
12Do not love the world.
- 1John 215, 16
-
- Do not love the world, nor the things in the
world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him. For all that is in the
world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the
eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from
the Father, but is from the world.
13 The Alternative to Loving the World is Doing
Gods Will
- 1John 217
- And the world is passing away, and also its
lusts but the one who does the will of God
abides forever.
14Know the Difference Between Gods Moral Will and
Providential Will.
- 1Thessalonians 43a
- For this is the will of God, your
sanctification
15Gods Moral Will is Known His Future
Providential Will is Not
- James 413, 14
- Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow, we
shall go to such and such a city, and spend a
year there and engage in business and make a
profit. JAM 414 Yet you do not know what your
life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor
that appears for a little while and then vanishes
away.
16Rather Than Boast of What We Cannot Know, We
Should Obey What We Do Know
- James 415-17
- Instead, you ought to say, If the Lord wills,
we shall live and also do this or that. But as
it is, you boast in your arrogance all such
boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the
right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it
is sin.
17 Make Efforts to Grow in Sanctification
- Hebrews 1214
- Pursue peace with all men, and the
sanctification without which no one will see the
Lord.
