Implementation ExampleAfter School Summer Program
  • The 21st Century Tech Skills and Careers program
is a collaboration among CITE (Center for
    Information Technology Education), NCAC
    (Nashville Career Advancement Center), Metro
Nashville Public Schools and the Metro Nashville
Chamber of Commerce. The alliance will enable
students from Metro Public Schools to attend an
after-school program to learn valuable workplace
skills. These skills will be acquired using a
project-based curriculum (Ford PAS) and working
    with local businesses and teachers.

3
Program Highlights
  • Ford PAS (Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies)
    curriculum will be used
  • Program will be offered during the 2nd and 5th
    six weeks
  • Program will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and
Thursdays for 90-120 minutes (24 hours total)
each session for a period of six eight weeks
  • A local business volunteer will work with each
school program to connect their projects to the
    business world
  • Students will be paid for successful completion
    of the program
  • Both teachers will be paid for 30 hours (24
contact hours and 6 planning hours) at the
Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools rate of
    17.10 per hour.

4
Incentives for Participation
  • Scholarships Students in the program will be
automatically eligible for all Ford PAS
    Scholarships and opportunities (see
www.fordpas.org for full descriptions). Ford PAS
offers many opportunities for students in the
form of scholarship money for college and other
opportunities such as studying abroad during the
summer. In addition to Ford PAS scholarships,
students will be learning skills that will better
equip them for other financial assistance for
    college.

5
Incentives Continued
  • Money One of the main objectives of the XXI
Tech program is to teach real-life career skills.
For many people, the incentive of a job/career
is financial compensation. For that reason,
participating students will be paid a stipend for
successfully completing the XXI Tech program.
The stipend will be 100 or 125, based on the
    following
  • Each student with exemplary completion of the
program will be compensated 125. In addition to
following all policies and procedures outlined in
the student/employee handbook, this student will
also have fours (4) and fives (5) in all
categories on his/her performance reviews. This
level of pay demonstrates the rewards for going
above and beyond the requirements of a job
    description.
  • Each student with successful completion of the
program will be compensated 100. This student
will abide by all policies and procedures
    outlined in the student/employee handbook.

6
Credentials
  • Credentials Perhaps the most important aspect
of the program is the opportunity for students to
fill their resumes and portfolios with skills
that will make them more employable in the
future. Just as the name of the program implies,
XXI Tech .roadmap to your career will provide
valuable workplace skills and academic knowledge.
Currently, the most important skills needed in
any workplace are communication, teamwork and
technology proficiency. The XXI Tech program is
rich in and built upon these needs.

7
Work Place Skills
  • The following skills are extremely important in
todays workplace and thus have captured the
attention of every organization in society that
    demands excellence. These skills, sometimes
referred to as interpersonal or soft skills, are
being taught and continuously improved in all
organizations from the classroom to the
boardroom. The activities within the Ford PAS
curriculum are rich in all of these skills and
will give students a head start in competing for
    future jobs.

8
Communication Team Work
  • Communication Communication skills are the heart
of interpersonal skills and the greater your
awareness of how it all works, the more effective
    your communication will be. Because
communication is the number one skill demanded in
any workplace, the program will be filled with
    communication development activities.
  • Teamwork One of the first realizations of
moving from the classroom to the workplace is
that work is rarely completed alone. The
workplace revolves around teams of all types,
from performance teams to committee groups. Most
activities within the curriculum will incorporate
    teambuilding activities and learning strategies
for team development. One rule of thumb to
remember is Together Everyone Achieves More!!!

9
Time Management Critical Thinking
  • Time Management Research shows that many
students discover the need to develop or hone
their time management skills when they arrive at
college. Unlike high school where teachers
    frequently structured assignments and classes
that fill the day, in college, one will have less
time, more work outside of class, and a great
deal of freedom and flexibility. To be
successful in the workplace, one must continue to
utilize time management strategies to meet
    performance goals and objectives.
  • Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the
mental process of actively and skillfully
    conceptualizing, applying, analyzing,
synthesizing, and evaluating information to reach
an answer or conclusion. Perhaps critical
thinking could be best defined as thinking
    outside the box for solutions.

10
Problem Solving Career Research
  • Problem Solving Problem solving is the process
of examining all aspects of a situation and
deriving at a positive solution. This process
    includes fact finding, analysis, recommendation
and implementation. People with the ability to
apply the concepts of problem solving are much
more likely to advance in the workplace.
  • Career Research Students will have the
opportunity to explore different careers and
learn about those careers. As a result, students
will be more likely to make sound decisions about
their career options in the future. Students
will not only learn about the careers, but also
how to apply for jobs, write resumes and practice
    interviewing techniques.

11
Technology Proficiency
  • Basic Computer Skills Businesses seem to expect
their employees to possess moderate to advanced
    level computer competencies. The expected
computer competencies range from proficiencies in
word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to
e-mail and Internet use. In addition to a working
knowledge of common software packages, employers
want prospective employees to have a basic
    understanding of computer operations, network
environments, and the World Wide Web. Many of the
employers indicated that the level of computer
skills is a determining factor in whether or not
a person is hired. The following computer
applications are both taught and applied within
    the curriculum.

  • Students will use the curriculum to create a
project at the end of each session.
  • Students will gain important workplace skills
that are often missing from standard curricula.
  • Additional student takeaways will be a better
understanding of education and career options for
    technological careers.
  • The business volunteer will be an active
participant with the students and teachers and
will provide business context and authenticity to
    the learning experience.
  • Local business volunteers will have an
opportunity to create relationships with schools
and help develop the future workforce.
  • Teachers will have the freedom to decide which
module activities within the Ford PAS curriculum
    to utilize.
  • Teachers will be expected to incorporate their
    experience into their regular classroom
    instruction.

Employee Hanbook
  • The employee handbook is a compilation of
    documents regarding the following
  • Workday Tardiness
  • Absences Sick Leave
  • Code of Conduct
  • Employee Dress Code
  • Safety Security
  • Performance Reviews
  • Payroll Information
  • Signature Sheet to confirm all of the above

15
Ford PASBusiness Representatives Roles and
Obligations
  • The addition of a real business person in the
program is vitally important. Students are able
to get a glimpse of the workplace through your
    discussions, descriptions, examples and
knowledge. This time is invaluable and a very
    essential element of Ford PAS.
  • Many adults have not been in the classroom in
many years and may not be comfortable working
with todays teen. Trust me, this journey will
probably be just as enjoyable and a learning
experience for you as well. Below are some
suggestions and guidelines when working with the
    students.

16
Suggestions on how to work with teachers
  • Get to know the teachersome teachers are more
flexible than others. For example, some teachers
may want to have a weeks notice for lessons,
while others are comfortable with very little
    prior notification.
  • Coordinate lessons and activities with the
teacherremember the teacher is responsible for
covering the material in the module.
  • Follow the Ford PAS curriculum to add interest in
your area of expertise. If you do not have a
copy, go to (Fordpas.org) and sign up as a guest
or you can register as a BEAC member.
  • Each module in the Ford PAS curriculum has
suggested ways that business representatives can
contribute to the module activities. This can be
    viewed on the website.
  • Have fun and enjoy being a mentor!!!

17
Suggestions on working with students
  • Develop a relationship with the studentstodays
students are very different than we were as
    students (times have changed).
  • Talk to them as real people.
  • Laugh with them.
  • Todays students have grown up in a different
era, lecturing to them rarely worksthey must be
    doing something.
