Faire is one of the most common French verbs. Its
basic meaning is to do, to make. Quest-ce que
tu fais? What are you doing?

There are several ways of asking questions in
French. When the subject of the sentence is a
pronoun, questions can be formed by INVERTING
(that is, reversing the order of) the subject and
the verb. Compare the two ways of asking the same
question WITH INTONATION WITH INVERSION Tu as
un vélo? As-tu un vélo? Vous êtes
français? Êtes-vous français? Elle vend des
ordinateurs? Vend-elle des ordinateurs?
Ils habitent à Québec? Habitent-ils à Québec?

In inverted questions, the verb and the subject
pronoun are joined with a hyphen.
In inverted questions, the sound / t / is
pronounced between the verb and the subject
pronouns il, elle, ils, elles, and on. Note that
if the il/elle/on-form of the verb ends in a
vowel, the letter -t- is inserted between the
verb and the pronoun. Il a un job. A-t-il un bon
job? Elle travaille. Travaille-t-elle beaucoup?
