26Demon
Possession
Today?
27Wild Speculation
- Charismatics, Pentecostals, and now many
Evangelicals, have a tendency to attribute any
significant act of sinfulness, even by their own
children, as being the temporary possession by an
evil spirit. - People who are merely strange or afflicted with
mental illness are often thought of as being
demon-possessed. - People who lead extremely wicked lives or who are
deep into the occult are often thought of as
being demon possessed.
28Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - So-called modern examples of demon possession and
exorcism bear no resemblance to the genuine
examples of spirit possession described in the
New Testament.
29Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - A careful study of the NT leads to the
conclusion that demon possession was a
first-century experience suspended near the end
of the apostolic era.
30Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - Zechariah 131-2 prophesies of the removal of
the unclean spirt from the land at the time of
Jesus.
31ZECHARIAH 131-2
1 "In that day a fountain shall be opened for
the house of David and for the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. 2 "It
shall be in that day," says the LORD of hosts,
"that I will cut off the names of the idols from
the land, and they shall no longer be remembered.
I will also cause the prophets and the unclean
spirit to depart from the land.
32ZECHARIAH 131
1 "In that day a fountain shall be opened for
the house of David and for the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
- TIME OF CHRIST ESTABLISHED BY THE CONTEXT See
Zech. 1210-14 - POURING OF HOLY SPIRIT v.10 cf. Acts 21ff)
- PIERCING OF CHRIST (v. 10 cf. Jn. 2025-27)
- MOURNING IN THAT DAY (v. 11 cf. Lk. 2417)
- STRIKE THE SHEPHERD (137 cf. Matt. 31, 56)
33OBSERVATIONS
- PROPHETS WOULD DWELL TEMPORARILY AND THEN BE
REMOVED - UNCLEAN SPIRITS WOULD DWELL TEMPORARILY AND THEN
BE REMOVED - EITHER DEMONS WERE CAUSED TO DEPART FROM THE
LAND IN THAT DAY OR NOT! - DO YOU BELIEVE ZECHARIAH? OR SOME MODERN DAY
PREACHER WHO THINKS DEMONS STILL EXIST?
34IF DEMONS EXISTED ON EARTH TODAY
- THERE WOULD BE NO DEBATE
- SUCH WOULD BE WELL ESTABLISHED IN THE MINDS OF
ALL MEN - THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF BODILY HARM INFLICTED
UPON MODERN DAY EXORCISTS (cf. Acts 1913-16)
35THOSE WHO PRACTICE EXORCISMS TODAY
- LIKE THE SEVEN SONS OF SCEVA, TODAYS EXORCISTS
SPEAK IN THE NAME OF JESUS BUT ARE NOT TRUE
MINISTERS OF CHRIST - TEACH FALSE DOCTRINE REGARDING SALVATION, THE
CHURCH, ETC. - THEY WILL USE SIMILAR DECEPTIVE TACTICS TO FOOL
THEIR AUDIENCE, YET THEY WILL NOT BE OVERCOME BY
A DEMON. . . BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE IN THE LAND
TO OVERCOME THEM!!!!
36New Testament Data
- The New Testament explicitly states that the day
would come when miracles would cease. (1 Cor.
138-10) - With the close of the first century, when the
Scriptures were completed, the age of miraculous
gifts came to a close.
Edited from Demons Ancient Superstition or
Historical Reality? by Wayne Jackson
37New Testament Data
- No one is duplicating the miracles of the first
century. - No one can walk upon water, raise the dead, calm
a raging storm, turn water into wine, instantly
heal an amputated ear, extract tax money from a
fishs mouth, etc.

Historical Reality? by Wayne Jackson
38New Testament Data
- Miracles are self-authenticating phenomena that
cannot be denied, even by hostile critics (cf.
John 1147 Acts 414-16). - Miracles are NOT occurring today.

- Jesus Heals Peters Mother-in-law and Many
Others (38-41) - It seems that Lukes purpose in recording the
healing of Simons mother-in-law is to show the
immediate and dramatic improvement that took
place when Jesus healed.
44Luke 442-44 (NKJV)
(42) Now when it was day, He departed and went

47Chapter 431-44
Lessons
48LUKE 431-44 Lessons
- Preachers need to read and speak the oracles of
God, not speculations. - Miracles were instantaneous, astonishing, and
undeniable, not like those claimed today. - Exorcisms, healings and all miracles were for the
purpose of establishing the authority of the
words of Gods messenger(s), not for satisfying
the earthly desires of the multitudes.
