Title: Task Analysis
1Task Analysis
In order to consider the problem in more detail
and organise your first thoughts, it is necessary
to carry out a brainstorm.
Who is your product for? Who do you need to talk
to? Do you need to conduct interviews or
construct a questionnaire?
Where will the product be used? Where will you
obtain the relevant information?
WHERE?
WHO?
Analysis
WHAT?
HOW?
WHY?
What products will you look at? What design
influences could you look at? (Art Deco?)
List all the materials and processes you could
use. Do you need to look at mechanisms?
What do you hope to achieve?
2Starter sentence to explain why you are doing an
inspiration page and how you will use it as part
of your research.
Inspiration Page
3Product Analysis
Starter sentence to explain what form of research
you are doing and why.
Materials. What materials have been used and why?
Ergonomics Is it safe, easy and more efficient to
use? Could it be improved? Is it easy to lift and
carry? How easy is it to assemble?
Function. What was the target market? What is it
designed to do? How does it work? Can it be
easily maintained?
Style Is it modern? Has it been influenced?
Conclusions Also consider can it be recycled? Is
a particular group of people excluded from using
it?
Manufacturing. How was it made? Processes used?
4Questionnaire and results
Starter sentence that explain what form of
research you are doing and why.
Questionnaire
Results in the form of pie or graphs
Please could you fill out this questionnaire so I
can gather data to help me design my GCSE Project
1. ????? 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Brief conclusion
5Materials and Finishes
Starter sentence to explain what you are
researching into and why.
Materials you can look into are Pine, Acrylic,
MDF, Plywood, Hardboard, Aluminium.
You can present your research for materials and
finishes in either a table or paragraphs. You
need to make sure you explain the category of the
material, characteristics and properties and give
examples of uses. Depending on which module you
have chosen to do will depend on the materials
you look into. Do not stick samples of materials
onto your sheet.
6Starter sentence to explain what you are
researching into and why you are doing it.
Joining Methods
Present your information in your own layout
Wood Joints
Knock down fixings
Metal joining
Glues
7Research on human factors
You could make an ergonome and highlight areas of
the body you will need to consider. Those of you
doing the chair will need to include
anthropometric data for a chair.
Starter sentence to explain why you are
researching into human factors and how it will
help you.
Ergonomics/Anthropometrics Explain what
ergonomics and anthropometrics is. Explain what
human factors you will need to consider.
(Comfort, ease of use, which human sizes are
important). SAFETY Note issues regarding size,
colour and weight.
8This can be done in the form of paragraphs with
headings or a table. You need to make sure you
explain your answers in detail.
Research Analysis
9When writing your specification you must reflect
on what you have written in your research
analysis.
Specification
Safety- How will you make your product safe? If
your product was going to be manufactured what
safety certificate should it have? - Finish-
Looking at your research what would be the most
suitable finish for the materials you have
chosen? - Ergonomics and Anthropometrics- What
parts of the human body will use your product and
how will that effect the size of it? How will you
ensure that your product is easy, comfortable and
safe to use? - Function- What is your product
going to be? What does it need to do? -
Manufacturer- Will you use specific processes to
make your product? What scale of production are
you expecting your product to be manufactured
on? - Life expectancy- How long will the product
expected to last? - Social/Moral- How are you
going to make sure your product is accepted by
all?
Target Market- Who is the target market for your
product? - Environment- What is the intended
environment? How will it be environmentally
friendly? - User Needs- What are the requirements
of the user? - Size- Are their any specific
dimensions you need to use? What will it be
storing? - Aesthetics- Does your product need to
match a particular style, shape, form, colour and
proportion? - Quality- Overall, what standard of
finish do you expect from your product? How are
you going to ensure that your product is high
quality? - Materials- Looking at your research,
what would be the best material for you to make
your product out of and why?
10Design Ideas
This should be a page of 10 quick 3D free hand
sketches with notes on possible materials and
joining methods. You can colour the three ideas
you whish to take forward to develop.
11Development
Take three ideas and develop them to improve
them. Draw neatly in 3D with exploded diagrams,
notes and measurements. This may go onto two
pages.

17Cad Orthographic
To get a C or above you need to include CAD in
your folder and show in your industrial processes
how you would use CAM in industry. You can
include CAM by using the milling machine or
plotter cutter
18Presentation Drawing
This will be a Pro Desktop drawing for those of
you who have learnt how to use it.
19Modifications
Write and draw any changes you made to your
product and explain why. If you do not include
this you will not be able to get a C or above
in your practical work!
