• Essential question How do the three sides of a

• Named after the Pythagoreans the disciples of
  Pythagoras (6th century BC), although it was
  known in some form for at least 1,000 years prior
  to that time.

• Note that the Greeks did not express things
  symbolically like this.
• Writing mathematical relationships symbolically
  did not appear until the 15th century. The above
  would have been similar to how Rene Descartes
  would have written it (17th century).
