Country Location Economy
  • In Eastern Africa (long 290 and 40 E.) and Lat 10
    and 120S).
  • Population Est. at 33 million people (2002)
  • Economy Over 50 of GDP depend on Agriculture
    employing 80 of the population

Irrigation Potential Vs Irrigated Area
  • 43 million ha are suitable for agricultural
    production
  • 29.4 million ha are potential for irrigation.
  • - 2.3 million ha of high potential
  • - 4.8 million ha of medium potential and -
    22.3 million hectares of low potential.
  • Area under irrigation at present is 224,395 ha

Policy
  • Tanzania and Agricultural Sector Development
    Programme (ASDP). The main focus being
  • Increasing agricultural productivity and
  • Boost Smallholders Family incomes.
  • In this regard, Irrigated agriculture has been
    given high priority in terms of resources
    allocation to implement irrigation programmes.

Smallholder Irrigation Improvement Project (SIIP)
  • The Project
  • SIIP is funded by the World Bank and the
    Government of Tanzania.
  • Started in December 1996 and is coming to an end
    on June 30, 2004.
  • The project is operating in two river basins
    namely Pangani and Rufiji among 9 existing river
    basins in Tanzania.

Key objectives of SIIP are to
  • Increase paddy yield from 1.8t/ha and 2.0t/ha to
    4.0t/ha and 5.0t/ha for Rufiji and Pangani basins
    respectively.
  • Increase family incomes from US 340 to US 1,100
  • Improve irrigation efficiency from 15 to 30
  • Farmers capacity building

  • There is need to continue rehabilitating schemes
    in partnership with Irrigators Associations and
    put more area under crop production
  • Irrigation is good hope for increased food
    security and farm incomes
