DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Journalism is dealing with disruptive upheaval
    caused by transformations in technology,
    economics/markets, demographics and other
    societal shifts.

-Cole Campbell
4
DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Inventing the next form of journalism will
    require journalists to relinquish
  • old practices that no longer work,
  • old conceptions of self that no longer hold,
  • old assumptions that are no longer valid.

-David Ryfe
5
DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Disruptions demand adaptive responses changes
in routines, reflexes and other professional
    behavior.
  • Merely reasserting standards or refining
    techniques is not enough.

-Cole Campbell
6
DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Requires a change of IDENTITY and CULTURE,
  • not merely of technique or practice.

-David Ryfe
7
DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Adaptive responses require experimentation
testing approaches that may or may not work.

-Cole Campbell
8
DISRUPTION AND ADAPTATION
  • Experiments that work should lead to innovations
    in practice and theory.
  • The experiments cant be idiosyncratic they must
    address practical and theoretical questions.

Solution Journalism
  • Reconceiving
  • how journalism might be done
  • how journalism might better serve communities
  • the individuals who pay attention -- the people
    formerly know as the audience

Information by itself doesn't change communities.
-Donica Mensing

The problem
  • In the case of the environment, much of the news
coverage tends to be conflict-oriented, and most
often stories characterize the environment as a
struggle between recognized groups, such as oil
    companies and environmentalists.

12
Approaching a solution
  • Make a Green Promise is a Web 2.0-inspired
platform for creating an online space to
    facilitate journalism, social interaction and
cooperation in community activities related to
    the environment.

13
Connecting with readers
  • We can connect to the audience/community we need
to test our interactive journalism experiments
with if we connect with existing audiences and
communities already paying attention to the
    content/coverage area.
  • attentive publics

What if .
  • Journalism concerning the environment were
    solution-oriented rather than conflict-oriented?
  • In other words, it is no longer enough for
journalist to cover a problem. Journalism has
to help identify options and engage citizens in
    finding solutions.

19
The foundation
  • We believe that people want to get involved to
make their communities a better place to live and
help create a sustainable environment, and that
journalism has important role to play in creating
that local actionable information that people
    want.

20
Journalism and community
  • Reduce emphasis on forms of environmental
    journalism emphasize neutrality, facts,
authority, official expertise, and so on.
  • Rely on the people formerly know as the
audience to help create, distribute and process
    a communitys information.

21
Make a green promise
  • What if the swirl and spiral of the discourse of
everyday life were supplemented by a journalism
that focuses attention of the possibilities of
    the Common Good?

22
In essence
  • What if there was a new kind of journalism that
places the individual and the public at the
center of the story. What if there were a Web
site and social networking platform that
challenged citizens -- "I'll do it, but only if
    you help me."
