Welcome and Logistics
  • Kathy Fontaine
  • Earth Science Data Systems Working Group 6th
    Joint Meeting
  • Philadelphia, PA October 23 - 25, 2007

2
Welcome to the 6th Joint ESDSWG Meeting
  • First meeting was in January 2004
  • Held semi-annually for a few years, then went
    annual
  • The year in reviewcoming soon
  • Part of this years activity is to review
achievements for 2007 and plan for 2008
  • These will be assembled in an annual report
  • Annual reports for 2005 and 2006 are on our web
    site
  • Miscellaneous items of note
  • Cost Estimation Toolkit approved for open source
  • NASA will do an internal review for next steps
  • ACCESS pages loaded - please send your info to
    me!
  • Single sign-on for metrics and eBooks in the
works (hopefully by the end of the calendar
    year).

3
ESDSWG Relationships with Other Organizations
  • Tend to be fostered through individuals
transferring the knowledge from the working group
    in question. For example -
  • NOAA basing a standards process (with some
    modifications) after the Standards Processes
    Group
  • USGEO interest in standards and information
service security issues for the Service Oriented
Architecture white paper being completed by the
Architecture and Data Management Working Group
  • CEOS and GEO interest from the information
systems and services working group on CEOS
  • Experience with sensor web technologies and
services from the TIWG could be a key
    contribution
  • Participation in the Standards and Interfaces
Forum (part of the GEO Architecture and Data
    Committee)
  • Preservation and Adding Value Conference
(PV2007) presented status of the cost
    estimation toolkit

4
Continued Progress, Increasing Awareness
  • ESDSWG members have given talks, posters, and
sessions at AGU, EGU, IGARSS, ESIP Federation,
    and other conferences
  • HQ data system solicitations via ROSES now
require membership in these working groups
  • These groups are a KEY component of the NASA core
    and community data system approach
  • Core all the hardware, software, physical
    infrastructure, and intellectual capital NASA
recognizes as necessary for meeting its
requirements for Earth science data system
management. Core data system elements reflect
NASAs responsibility for managing Earth science
satellite mission data characterized by the
continuity of research, ready access to and
    usability of data.
  • Community those tools or capabilities developed
and deployed largely outside NASAs core elements
and are characterized by their evolvability and
    leading-edge innovation.

5
Considerations for the Week
  • The landscape is changing data systems are
    evolving at NASA
  • EOSDIS evolution study underway
  • Decadal Survey from NRC is providing further
    guidance
  • New solicitations are on the horizon to highlight
areas where the community can provide crucial
    components (watch ROSES)
  • Partnerships are more critical to NASA than ever
    before (both national and international)
  • Our working groups have a broad perspective, and
are working with and within the latest
    technologies, services, and paradigms
  • You will have the opportunity to see, discuss,
and perhaps evaluate some of the key
technologies, services, and practices that will
    enable success
  • How can those technologies, services, practices,
    partnerships, help us evolve.
