Center for Wireless Information Network Studies
- CWINS is an internationally renown compact
wireless research laboratory with a successful
history of research alliances with other groups
in the industry and academia. Prominent
features of CWINS include - Close ties with the world leading wireless
industry of Finland, that includes Nokia - Experience in technology and regulatory issues
for commercial and military applications - Experience in development of testbeds and tools
for design and performance monitoring - Experience as a corporate consultant in
establishing wireless programs in several
companies - Experience in on-sight training programs in
several companies - Being a center for information exchange among
different sectors of the wireless industry by
publishing an international journal and
organizing several international conferences

Center for Wireless Information Network Studies
- 1985 Started as the first research program in the
wireless field in the US - 1986 Was awarded the first NSF grant in wireless
indoor networks - 1989 Founding member of the IEEE PIMRC at UK
- 1989 Founding member of the IEEE ISSSTA at UK
- 1991 Organized the first IEEE workshop in
wireless LANs at WPI - 1992 Organized the third IEEE PIMRC in Boston
- 1994 Started IJWIN, the first journal in wireless
communications - 1995 Published the first graduate level textbook
in wireless networks - 1996 Started the WLRL as an industrial research
alliance - 1996 Organized the second IEEE workshop in
wireless LANs at WPI - 1997 Started WILU project with Nokia and other
Finnish agencies - 1997 Started design of Geolocation-Telecommunicati
on networks with DARPA - 1998 Organized the ninth IEEE PIMRC in Boston
- 1999 Received a Nokia fellowship to initiate an
educational program with U. of Oulu, Finland - 2000 Fulbright-Nokia scholarship
- 2001 Organized the second IEEE workshop in
wireless LANs at WPI - 2002 Published the Principles of Wireless
