  • Survivor guilt is the type of remorse felt by
people who manage to survive a tragic event
involving much loss of life, especially the lives
of friends and loved ones or other people
    commonly associated with the survivor.

3
  • Survivor guilt is the term used to describe the
feelings of those who, fortunately, emerge from a
disaster which mortally engulfs others. On an
irrational level, these individuals wince at
their privileged escape from death's clutches.

4
  • After someone dies and after traumatic events,
    "survivor guilt" may occur because
  • (a) individuals feel guilty for surviving or
being uninjured when others were killed or
    injured
  • (b) they were unable to rescue someone or had to
leave someone dying in the disaster or
  • (c) it was not possible to overcome "the bad
guys" (Holen, 1993 Simpson, 1993). Survivors who
went through the event may feel guilt because of
a notion that bad things happen to people who
deserve them and/or because of fear that
persuades us to blame the victim (Jenkins, 1985).
They also may feel guilt for being unable to
    control trauma symptoms (Schiraldi, 2000).

5
  • Gallipoli Battle of the Nek
  • Survivor guilt also has the potential to compel
an individual to remain mired in his past, to the
relative exclusion of his present or future.
  • Total casualties between 26,000 and 28,000 men

6
  • I was warm and snug.  I woke up and looked around
me.  Where was I? In hospital - a whitewashed
room with many beds.  I did not ask any
questions I was still and quiet.  I wished I
would feel so warm and peaceful throughout
    eternity.

7
  • Prelude Two previous attacks by the 1st Light
Horse Brigade at Quinn's Post and at Pope's Post
were beaten back with 3/4 of the attacking troops
    becoming casualties
  • August 7, 1915 gtgt attack scheduled to commence at
    430 p.m.
  • Bombings were not time-synchronized and
communications between generals were lost and
    slow
  • The battle was doomed to fail
  • Approx. 600 men were sent out that today approx.
    450 died

8
  • One of the lts in command on August 7
  • 2nd Lt Throssell was awarded the Victoria Cross
for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to
duty during operations on the Kaialij Aghala
(Hill 60) in the Gallipoli Peninsula on 29 and 30
    August 1915.
  • Suffered severe wounds and was ordered out of
    action

9
  • Rejoined forces in Egypt and fought at the 2nd
battle of Gaza in April of 1917
  • Brother, Ric, was killed
  • On the night that Ric disappeared, Hugo crawled
across the battlefield under enemy fire,
searching in vain for his brother among the dead
and dying, and whistling for him with the same
signal as they had used when boys
  • Hugo returned to his regiment for the final
offensives in Palestine and led the 10th Light
Horse guard of honour at the fall of Jerusalem

10
  • After WWI ended, Hugo claimed that the
suffering he had seen had made him a socialist,
and was an outspoken opponent of war
  • This outraged many Australians, as he was a natl
war hero and son of a former premier
  • Shot himself on November 19, 1933

11
  • Each member of the Lamb family experiences some
form of survivor guilt, and this syndrome impacts
their inter-family relationships as well as how
they interact with others outside of their
family, and also the ways in which they view
    themselves.
