Choir Facts
  • When holding out a note, the consonant should be
put on the upcoming beat. For Ex. When Holding a
note for 2 beats (half Note) the consonant should
be put at the beginning of the 3rd beat.
  • The reason we do choir warm-ups is to stretch our
vocal muscles to prepare for singing.
  • When singing, the inside of your mouth should be
    spacious, open, and lifted
  • The AH vowel should always be sung vertically.
Never with the mouth horizontal-to avoid the
    Texas Twang
  • The most important skill to develop in choir, in
order, are Sight Reading, blend, and building
    vocal strength
  • Half-steps in the solfege scale fall between MI
    and FA
  • To set our key, we use D-M-S-M-D-S-Do

6
Choir Facts
  • When singing in unison, we are all singing the
    same part together.
  • The method we use to sight read is called solfege
and we use syllables, DRMFSLTD to sight read
  • The lines below and above the staff are called
    ledger lines
  • The most mispelled word in Choir, is the word
CHOIR. Know how to spell this word!
  • When singing, our goal should never be to
out-sing everyone else. It should be to blend
    with each other
  • The order in which students are placed on the
risers makes a huge difference in sound. Why is
    this?

7
Choir Definitions
  • Accent Placed above a note to indicate stress or
    emphasis
  • Accidental A sharp or flat
  • Beat Pulsation or count within a measure of
    music
  • Clef Signs Signs placed at the beginning of
  • a staff which indicate the pitch of the notes
on the staff. For Ex Treble and Bass Cleff
  • Fermata To hold or pause until the director cuts
    you off
  • Fine A sign that indicates the end of a piece
  • Flat Lowers a note by half of a step

8
Choir Definitions
  • Harmony A simultaneous combination of pitches.
Two or more parts singing different notes
    together
  • Interval The distance between two notes
  • Key Signature The sharps or flats placed at the
beginning of the staff to indicate the key
  • Legato Performing the music smoothly and
    connected
  • Ledger Lines Lines placed below and above the
staff that go beyond the range of the staff.
These are very short lines, unlike staff lines
  • Measure-The area between two bar lines
