Adverbs
  • An adverb is a word used to modify a verb, an
    adjective, or another adverb.
  • Most commonly it is used as the modifier of a
    verb.
  • For example She walked slowly to the car.
  • Slowly is used to modify the verb walked.

Adverb Clauses
  • Like an adverb, an adverb clause is a dependent
    clause used to modify a verb, an adjective, or an
    adverb.
  • Adverb clauses provide information about what is
    going on in the independent clause.

Types of Adverb Clauses
  • There are many different types of adverb clauses.
    Some of the most common are
  • Place
  • Time
  • Cause
  • Purpose
  • Concession
  • Condition

Place
  • This type of adverb clause answers the question
    Where?
  • Wherever there are computers, there is Microsoft
    software.
  • This adverb clause modifies the verb is.

Time
  • The time adverb clause answers the question
    When?
  • After the fruit is harvested, it is sold at the
    market.
  • When is it sold? After the fruit is harvested.

Cause
  • This clause answers the question Why? (What
    caused this?)
  • Because Josh was shy, he didnt call Mary to ask
    her to the dance.
  • Why didnt Josh call Mary? Because he was shy. It
    modifies call.

Purpose
  • Purpose adverb clauses answer the question Why?
    (What was the reason for doing this?)
  • So that she could get a better job, Margaret took
    a computer course.
  • This adverb clause modifies the verb took. She
    took a computer course so that she could get a
    better job.

Concession
  • Answers the question Why is this unexpected?
  • Although Jay has a Masters degree, he works as a
    store clerk.
  • It is unexpected for someone that has a Masters
    degree to work as a store clerk. This adverb
    clause modifies works.

Condition
  • Answers the question Under what conditions?
  • If you save your money, you will be able to go to
    college.
  • Under the condition that you save your money, you
    will be able to go to college. This modifies the
    verb able.

Subordinating Conjunctions
  • An adverb clause begins with a subordinating
    conjunction.
  • You can always tell an adverb clause by its first
    word as a subordinating conjunction.
  • Some of the most common are after, before,
    until, while, because, since, as, so that, in
    order that, if unless, whether, though, although,
    even though, where

  • Modifies the verb is.

  • After, as soon as, as long as, before, once,
    still, till, until, when, whenever, while
  • After the rain watered the plants, the flowers
    started to grow.
  • Modifies the verb started.

  • As, because, in order that, since, so that
  • Because Karen went to the movies, she did not do
    her homework.
  • The cause of Karen not doing her homework was
    because she went to the movies. Modifies the verb
    do.

  • Although, as, as though, even though, just as,
    though, whereas, while
  • Although she got good grades on the quizzes,
    Maria always failed the tests.
  • Modifies the verb failed.

Condition Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Even if, if, in case, provided that
  • If you study your vocab, you will make a good
    grade on the test.
  • Modifies the verb make.
