Title: How to give a Power Point Presentation

1
How to give a Power Point Presentation
  • Holly Hunts, Ph.D., CFCS
  • Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Montana State University

2
Choose a topic that fits power point
  • Lecture format
  • Hard to do hands-on
  • Lights off
  • Two things at once
  • Cognitive objectives
  • Affective work at it
  • Add frills
  • Add statistics

3
Start with a title slide
  • Your name, position and company

4
Set the ground rules (with or without a slide
about it)
  • How long is the presentation going to last?
  • Can they ask questions during the presentation?
  • What material are they responsible for?
  • Will there be an exam? Homework?
  • Should they take notes?
  • Is there a hand-out with the material on it?

5
Give them a road map
  • Introduction
  • Main topics
  • Summary
  • Questions and answers
  • Small group work

6
Anticipatory Set
  • Music
  • Interesting photo
  • Interesting quote (Internet)
  • Interesting statistic (Internet)
  • Provocative statement

7
Examples
  • With a stop light, green means 'go' and yellow
means 'slow down'. With a banana, however, it is
quite the opposite. Yellow means 'go', green
means 'whoa, slow down', and red means 'where the
heck did you get that banana?' Mitch
    HedbergAmerican comedian (1968 - 2005)

8
Or a serious quote
  • Always bear in mind that your own resolution to
succeed is more important than any one thing.
    Abraham Lincoln16th president of US (1809 -
    1865)

9
Group Topics Together
  • Like an essay similar topics together
  • Control what the audience sees at one time.
  • One slide one topic

10
Help your audience with transitions
  • Use the title of your slides
  • Use your voice YOU are value added
  • REMEMBER Talk to the audience, not the screen!
  • The show should NOT be totally self-explanatory
  • Use bullet points that are meaningful
  • And, but, or (chalkboard story)

11
Note there are bullet points not paragraphs!
  • Think about their notes
  • Keywords
  • Key statistics

12
Edit!!!
  • Think about controlling what the audience sees
all at once (go back and edit)
  • You unfold a story sequentially not all at
    once.
  • check that you are consistent about
    capitalization.
  • Capitalization
  • Check spellling (or you look like a phool!)

13
ALWAYS!!
  • Know every word/diagram/equation/etc. YOU put on
    YOUR slide
  • Ph.D. Exam example Power Pump
  • Doubling ?

14
Add sound effects
  • Make sure they can be heard when presented
  • Speed of computer for presentation
  • Software of computer for presentation
  • Speakers?
