language and allegiance to England, but they had
different patterns of settlement, different
economies, and different political systems.

  • Martin Luther (1517, Wittenberg) declared BIBLE
    only source of Gods wordREFORMATION!
  • John Calvins theology dominates in New England.
    God all knowing, all powerful, and all
    good man corrupt, weak, and wicked.
  • Ideas are hitting England when King Henry VIII
    breaks ties to the Catholic Church (1530)

Doctrine of ELECT/PREDESTINATION You had to be a
visible saint
Henry wanted to divorce his wife Catherine and
marry Anne Boleyn (he needed a son) He formed the
Church of England (Anglican Church) and made
himself head of the Church

Not everyone liked Henrys new church
Puritans-wanted purification of the new church--
A small group known as separatists left England
(went to Holland) and sought a settlement in the
New World.

B. When they made the journey, they became known
as Pilgrims
  • Negotiate w/ Virginia Company sail on
    MAYFLOWER
  • Traveled 65 Days, arrive off-course (1620)
  • Only half of 102 are actually separatists.
  • Did not originally land at Plymouth Rock. Tried
    several places before settling outside the
    jurisdiction of VA company.
  • Before leaving ship, draw up MAYFLOWER COMPACT

-agreement to form government and submit to
will of majority -signed by 41 men -step to
self-government -swear allegiance to KING

-First year,44 of 102 survive -No one wants to
return to England (Mayflower goes
back) -Next fall celebrate first
thanksgiving-focus on fur, fish, and
lumber Never great numbers/wealth First
settlement motivated primarily by religious
reasons.
SQUANTO (spoke English) worked out peace treaty
with local natives. Eventually this peace would
be forgotten and war would break out

C. THE BAY COLONY (Puritans among us)
-More moderate Puritans sought to reform the
church from within -(1629) Felt they were no
longer safe in England (Charles I dismissed
Parliament). -Got a charter from the
Massachusetts Bay Company.
1630 The Great Migration 11 ships, nearly 1000
immigrants John Winthrop first governor
Prospered through fur, fishing, and ship
building. Biggest and most influential New
England settlement.

God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and
the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to
plant the first colony in the northern parts of
Virginia do by these presents, solemnly and
mutually in the Presence of God and one of
another, covenant and combine ourselves together
into a civil Body Politick, for our better
Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the
Ends aforesaid And by Virtue hereof to enact,
constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws,
Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from
time to time, as shall be thought most meet and
convenient for the General good of the Colony
unto which we promise all due submission and
obedience. In Witness whereof we have hereunto
subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of
November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord,
King James of England, France and Ireland, the
eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth.
