After you have chosen an artist form the Master
list print out a drawing by this artist. Follow
these requirements for your drawing.

• Pick an image with complexity and variety of mark
  making. The Master drawing can be a sketch for a
  finished piece. The Master drawing can be in any
  drawing medium. Master drawing must be approved
  by the instructor.
• Print this picture in black and white any size.
• Copy the image exactly including garbage or ghost
  lines and any side sketches and text. The image
  should fill up the same amount of space as the
  original. No grids!
• You will use only conte sticks for your copy. You
  can use red, brown, black, white or all of the
  above.
• Sign drawing After artists name.
• Answer the questions on the next slide before,
  during and after your drawing. Answers worth 20
  points and must be handed in with finished
  drawing.

Master copy questions

• Describe the subject matter of the drawing. How
  does the medium or mark making relate to the
  subject matter.
• Did the artist erase to correct forms or did he
  let the mistakes show?
• Were the initial gestures a mistake or an
  integral part of the finished drawing? Would the
  drawing be as good without them?
• Were the movements fast, slow or hesitant, or
  were they a combination of these? Can you tell
  which are which?
• Are there many garbage lines that seem
  extraneous to the major thrust of the work or
  lines, if removed, would not be significant to
  the finished work?
• How much pressure do you think the artist applied
  to the drawing implement in various passages of
  the work?
• Was the drawing produced on smooth, rough ,
  absorbent or non-absorbent paper?
• Why did the artist use both tone (value) and line
  to define forms in one area and only one of these
  elements in other areas?
• What must her creative/thinking processes have
  been like as she was executing the work?
• What mood was he in?
