EDU 125 Finding Journal Articles on Language
Disabilities

We Will Cover
  • Annotated Bibliography Description and Samples
  • Finding Background Info on Your Topic
  • Selected Databases
  • Wrap Up and Discussion

3
Annotated Bibliography
  • Is an evaluative note added to each reference or
citation with the goal of helping the reader
assess whether the cited work is relevant to a
specific research topic or line of inquiry.
  • Is NOT an abstract. An abstract is simply a
brief statement that summarizes the main points
    of a work. Primarily descriptive.
  • Annotations can also be descriptive but your
    assignment calls for critical comment.

More Annotated Bibliography Samples
  • Booth, Pat F. (1987). Thesauri Their uses for
    indexers. The Indexer 15, 3, 141-144. This
article expands awareness about the variety of
uses of a thesaurus. Booth reminds us that
thesauri are useful for 1. subject
    familiarization (Cliff notes for self-education)
    2. meaning and authenticity checks (better than
    dictionaries because provide hierarchical context
and more frequently updated because in active
use) 3. vocabulary control (associated with
    indexing activity-most commonly understood use),
and 4. standard vocabulary for successive
indexes (quality control). It is valuable to
keep these four applications in mind in order to
create a fully developed, mature and effective
tool. These applications are also good measures
    for evaluation.
  • Davis, R. (1991). Learning how to learn
Technology, the seven multiple intelligences and
learning. Paper presented at the Spring CUE
Conference, Palm Springs, CA, May 11, 1991. (ERIC
    Document Reproduction Service No. ED338214)
Davis reviews a number of educational software
programs to support learning through the seven
multiple intelligences. He uses Snooper Troops as
an example and enumerates activities that
highlight each of the intelligences. Although the
activities for musical intelligence are weak, I
have used this software in conjunction with
songwriting to list the clues musically.
