Psy 360L Qualitative Research Methods
  • Data Collection and Analysis -- data collection
and data analysis are interactive and
inter-related processes. Continue to collect and
analyze-- we will begin to discuss data analysis
    today through exploring specific techniques.
  • Lab 6 -- Interviewing as a Method of Inquiry
Part 2-- present field work in PPoint
  • Lab 7 -- Data Reduction Techniques Coding and
    Data Displays

2
data management
  • organization is key
  • as you keep collecting data you will also analyze
    the data
  • its essential that you have a process that is
logical and clear for data collection and data
    analysis
  • make files with all your data
  • be methodical
  • get a BINDER to help organize your data
  • keep your data and all your work on disk

THEORY Why does this happen? Describes what
happened and interprets, possibly predicts,
through connecting various components together in
new ways.

Lab 7 -- Data Reduction TechniquesCoding and
Data Displays
  • Think of coding as a way to organize all the data
you have into categories or groups.
  • Put each piece of data into a category, such as,
    conflict, anger, mourning, aggression, etc.
  • Make a file for each category or CODE
  • For example, a sentence or section from an
interview that expresses anger would go in your
    anger code file.

20
Lab 7 -- Data Reduction TechniquesCoding and
Data Displays
  • Do the same thing with your fieldnotes from your
    observations
  • Do the same thing with your memos
  • You can use color pens or the computer or both
  • Look for interactions between the CODES, for
example, how is anger connected with stress?
  • Draw a map
  • Make an index of your CODES -- this is a list
